Any of you guys use Castrol R?

A friend of mine has moved his motorsport operation out to the Taupo track and in the cleanout process he has given me about 14 litres of Castrol R (3 x unopened 4litre containers and 1 x half full container). I don't have a use for the stuff but if anyone wants it, pay the freight and its yours.

Is this the castrol R4? (5W-40 synthetic 4 stroke oil)?????

If it is, I'll pay for any freight costs and any trouble for you to pack it and send it, etc....

[edit] - I'm reading this again to see that I'm indeed seeing it correctly... somehow sounds too good to be true... I'm in Palmy by the way..

eer.....no. This is the castor-based racing oil which has that wonderfully distinctive smell. Viscosity is SAE30.

if its a racing oil it probly doesn't have additives for long mileage operation, and any detergent to keep the engine clean. Means that you'll have to change that oil often... very often.

If I remember right, You never leave the old Castol R in an engine it gums it up.
Mix a little in to you fuel in the lawn motor and all the old timers in you area wil be draw like bee to a honey pot.

Yep, you are right. About every 1500 ks.....but hey, it's free!

This stuff has been around for a long time now. Used it back in the early 70's and it worked very well. Had no engine failures at all and at pull down time the engine was always clean with minimal wear. However this is a pure racing oil and I used to use fresh oil for every race meeting (and fresh again for each test day). Some racers still swear by it.

You only use it in engines that burn dope (methanol) like speedway solos and the like. it's not suitable for road bikes.

It used to be wicked expensive..

Nah all cool Bob. I probably should have stated things more clearly in the first place!
BTW, looking carefully at oils at the moment, how have you found the R4?

I've just started using the GPX, R4 is way out of my price range.... (just found 1 ltr bottles for about $25 or more and have never seen 4 ltr bottles)

I've heard good things about R4 though...

Castrol R is fine as a premix or in 2 strokes but flush any old 2 stroke oil out of any reservoir before changing to or from 'R' as mixing types will gum up & block the system. It says on the pack - not recomended as a 2 stroke mix but many users still recomend it.
AND IT SMELLS GREAT!

As Paul said,mainly for alky use as it mixes with alky and not petrol....so when you get fuel contamination with a rich running alky burner there is no problem.Can be used in a petrol burner,but care is needed.New Castor oils have a synth blend and won't gum,but this sounds like the real McCoy.Still the best for a 2 stroke too.

And used to be the only oil able to handle a worm drive diff - in trucks you could use the thickest goopiest EP oil you could find,and they'd still suck lumps out of the brass crown wheel.....but just SAE 30 castor oil would take all that load.

I'd love it....just to have on my shelf.....an just a drop in my lawn mower for a sunday trance.....
