    Sydney Tunnel Speeder Got Hammered

A motorcyclist who raced through the Sydney Harbour tunnel at speeds of up to 212kph for a "mad adrenalin rush" was today sentenced to six months' periodic detention.

Paul Jason Myers, 31, had pleaded guilty to 12 charges in Hornsby Local Court, including driving at dangerous speeds and failing to obey a police direction to stop.

The court heard Myers was detected speeding through the tunnel four times between January 23 and February 6 this year at speeds ranging from 159kph to 212kph.

Myers had an obscured number plate to escape apprehension.

On February 16, he evaded police officers from Operation Knievel, set up to catch him, leading them on a chase along the Gore Hill Freeway at speeds of up to 220kph.

But he was later tracked down and arrested by police. Myers' lawyer, Ken Stewart, told the court his client had been devastated by the death of a friend and perhaps "that mad adrenalin rush ... acts as an opiate for that pain in his mind".

But Magistrate Maxwell Taylor said the offences were in the most serious category and Myers posed both a danger to himself and the community.

He sentenced Myers to six months periodic detention, fined him $2,200 and disqualified him from driving for three years

I don't reckon his punishment was that bad considering what could have happened. Going 200+ through the harbour tunnel is pretty dumb, and there could have been alot worse consequences. He will have 3 years of walking to think about that.

I'll come in to bat for the bloke. Who here knows the condition of the harbour tunnel? It could be dead straight, smooth barrier walls, good lighting, and at the time of offences free of traffic (assumptions here) what bike was he riding? Hayabusa? if so then he was just cruising.

Laws are laws and if they are broken and you get caught then expect punishment, but should a mans peers condemn him with out knowing the full story? The same peers who bitch about getting tickets at 120kph?

Last time I went through that tunnel it was dark, hot, dirty, and full of traffic.

And the surface left a bit to be desired too. Too much traffic and not enough maintenance.

Even with no traffic I'd say you'd be hard pressed to be safe at anything over about 140.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Not likley with the state of our judicial system. Probably would loose their licence for 6 months or so and a fine, but probably not much else.
