Arrow 110 Years Later, We Go Back In Time

    Evening all,

I have just checked out the TVNZ website and found this little gem. http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/423466/706932

It seems that because a pedestrian "stepped out in front of a bus" that the Wellington City Council is considering lowering the speed limit to 30kph in the city.

Why don't we go all the way back and introduce the man with the red flag to walk in front and set the limit as 6.44 kph (4mph)

Surely, if I step out onto a road and get run over, some of the responsibility must be mine?

Is this The Nanny State gone mad??????

It is certainly a knee-jerk reaction from the Wellington CC

Even if they reduce it to 30km and if you walk out in front of a bus you are going to get seriously hurt or die!!!

But why should everyone else have to be punnished because bus drivers a psychos and can't drive?!

Bus drivers are terrible! They don't look where they are going at all! and just drive out infront of anyone!

The other day I am sure I saw a bus driver TEXTING!

People suggest these things but they never happen... thank god!

That's capitalism for y'. No prsonal responsibility. Viote Communist.

But, even accepting the need for buses to go slower (I don't, but for the sake of argument) , who says that you can't have different speed limits for buses and other vehicles? Of course you can, already have it for vehicles towing trailers and (in theory) mopeds. Easy enough to police, I imagine that even PC Plod can recognise a bus when he sees one.

    Hey Ixion,

I'm sure that you remember when they had a seperate speed limit for motorcyclists with a pillion (45mph from memory.) Shit, I papered my bedroom wall with those tickets. We were in danger of being run over/off the road at all times.

Still I suppose that nobody would run over a bus (other than another bus or an 18 wheeler.)

Not in the CBD. It's currently 50kph for all.

Some of those bus drivers in Wellington need that. Some are totally mental.

30 wouldn't be that bad anyway, during the day that is the fastest one can really drive safely around the core of the Wellington CBD. There are pedestrians, cycle couriers, buses pulling out, cars ducking around to grab parks, courier vans stopped in stupid places. So many hazards. Really, you couldn't go any faster safely.

I don't agree with the 40 km/h in Tawa idea, that's a bit wimpy, but 30 in town would be fine.

i Don't know what the fuss is about; here in auckland the max speed anyone can go is 20kph; Only difference in Auckland is it's due to congestion and in Welly it's gonna because of some .. oh wait.. the congestion here's caused by beaurocratic arses too!!! Doh!

    Harden up!!

There's a proposal around to turn LQ into a pedestrian mall anyway. I'd be surprised if buses averaged more than 5km/hr through the CBD, and bits of LQ are already off limit to cars.I saw a woman get hit by a bus that had just pulled away from the Willis St bus stop heading sthish. The bus would have been doing about 10km/hr when it struck her - she was looking the wrong way and stepped off the curb right in front of the bus. There was no way the driver could have done a thing. She flew a good 20 metres and landed in an unconcious crumpled heap. It happens,, and as Councillor Morrison said on the news tonight, it is the anti-motorist lobby using an unfortunate incident to push an agenda that not everybody on the WCC agrees with. Storm, meet teacup.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
