Does anyone know what the story is and how $$$ it costs to re-register a bike (ie was NZ registered but been off road for 10 years and not on hold)

You'll need to have the original rego plate or a VIN plate to prove that it was registered. Take it to VTNZ for an inspection (like a wof, but more intrusive). I think it cost me about $350 to get a numberplate, a wof and a rego for 6 months.

The break down of that is:

plate $15
rego $135
inspection $100 or $200 (maybe it only cost $250 all up)
