Keep them safe for me, Helen

During the week i decided to go to Tauranga to visit a mate that i hadnt seen for a while, and to get the Mrs back on the bike after her op about 5 weeks ago.
The weather wasnt looking too flash, but it wasnt raining, so on with the gear, and off we go.
Had a good cruise through Scotsmans Valley, not going much faster than 100km/h, but rarely going slower. Had a good run up the Kaimais, cars on the straights, none on the corners.
Stopped at the rest area for a break and a ciggy, while we were there a couple stopped on a ZZR1100, just picked it up from Tauranga, heading back to Ham. After a bit of a chat it was back on the road. The rest of the run into Tauranga was pretty uneventful.
After a good chin wag, a couple of coffees, and ciggys we decided to head home. As soon as we hit the road the rain started, we were prepared to get wet, so we just carried on.
As we started to climb the eastern side of the Kaimais, i was finding it hard to see where the best grip was, due to the cage in front of me spewing spray everywhere. When we reached the next passing lane i decided to over take the cage. Bad move, officer plod was comming the other way. A quick check in the mirrors, and i saw the brake lights come on. Shit, oh well you can catch me if you want. Got to the top of the hill and noticed the flashing red and blues catching up, so i found a gateway and pulled over.
He gave me a bit of a lecture about speeding and the conditions, blah, blah. And also asked why i was speeding. Felt like telling him that i had been too busy watching the road, to be watching the spedo, but just said i didnt realise how fast i had got to passing the car.
He had got me doing 116km/h. So after our little talk he went back to his car and wrote out a ticket. 16km/h over, 20 demerits, $120.
The rest of the ride was sweet, the rain stopped and the roads started to dry. Stopped in Matamata for some gas, and back through Scotsmans Valley again.
All in all an eventful trip to Tauranga, good roads, weather better than expected, and an arshole on a hill.
And Helen, if you could keep those demerits safe for me, ill get them back in a couple of years, even pay you $120

i've got a question about fines in that bracket, say you got one, your first one, is it likely to put your insurance costs up much? it's just i have to get a new policy at the end of the year when i get a bigger bike, so i was just wondering how much of an impact it is going to have?

That's the kind of speeding ticket that stinks. You passed a car for safety reasons. Spray hindering visability and get nailed for it. It's not as if you had to cross the centreline. You waited untill a passing lane.

I'd flick off a letter giving reasons and asking why you did not recieve any discreation and see what happens.

Not as far as I know. The courts do not take safety as a cause for speeding. Perhaps if a few judges rode bikes they may have some kind of understanding just how dangerouse it can be staying behind vehicles.

But who knows...........there's a first time for all things; even common sense in the courtroom.

Yeh, i was surprised as well, luckily he had to walk about 15m over to where i had parked my bike well off the road. I didnt leave the side of my bike, made him do all the walking in the rain.

I got pulled over in the pissing rain for doing 66 in a 50 and let of with a warning and no kind of lecture whatsoever, even after he reckoned he chasesd me for a few hundred metres! AND im on my learners with no L plate. I was fully expecting to be ticketed and didnt even bother telling the cop that I had always thought my speedo read slower and always rode around at 60k's on my speedo thinking I was doing 55 ish (turns out my speedo reads slow). I was really lucky actually!

    Dear PaddyFZ1

We have reviewed your submission in regards to the infringment notice. Over taking is no defence for speeding. In the future if you can't see because of road spray from a vehicle ahead then you should increase the gap between the two vehicles.

    Best regards,
    Facist Bully Boy

[Edit:] I tried this when I was overtaking some cars. I was in the overtaking lane, and the car on my left completely closed the gap between him and the car in front. The lane was going to run out so I gassed it. Their response: No defence sir, and no further correspondance will be entered into....

write back and say that you have tried that and the result was you had cars and trucks tailgating you.... hence the safe place to be would be in front of the lead car... or does he have a better suggestion?
