My dilemma on the m/w today

Here I am going down the Ngauranga Gorge this morning, traffic going 60km/h. So, I decide to lane split. Carefully I go, doing no more than 15km/h above the traffic speed. As I come onto the the onramp for the Wellington Motorway, who should I see than a bike cop cruising with the traffic !!!
Think, " what do I do,...pull into the traffic and hope he didn't see me,...pull along side him and yell "gidday" or think "buggerit, he must have seen me coming through in his mirrors, keep going as I must have broken some law by now !!" So I do the latter, edge past him quietly and keep going expecting at any second to hear a siren !! I look in my mirrors to see him looking past the Beemer fairing at me but, he didn't follow.

Ah well, I guess I just watch the mailbox now for a letter marked from the Plod.......

Yeah the lane splitting thing is up to the cop who does the pulling over... you obviously weren't riding stupid fast or dangerous so he let it slide... there are still some good cops out there
I'm not a complete idiot... some pieces are missing

He was on a bike. I think he will understand.

Oooo Chris you're a bad man!! The armed offenders squad will be staking out your house waiting for you to return. They've probably asked the guy next door (with the P lab) if they can wait at his place for you to get home! The Pedophile on the other side has been providing them with coffee....

Ha you'll get a reputation the cop was probably jealous that you were doing it, He/she may have been wishing they could and were in full understanding of the circumstances. It's at their discretion and maybe if you'd been giving the ZX its head it may have been a different story :slap:

Don't sweat it Chris. The HP lads down here seem reasonably relaxed as long as you're not being a prat.

    Now about Helston Road.

I had the same problem the other day, heavy traffic heading home (north), I was carefully splitting along when a motorway support ute joined from base just north of the bridge, I thought I was busted. He put his lights on behind me, pulled up next to me (in my lane) and gave a quick toot. Leant out the window and said "Watch out mate, a bus has dropped its guts up the road and spilt oil everwhere, stay away from X lanes". WHEW! Gave him the thumbs up and continued on my merry way

Ha ha ha,...love some of those answers, guys !!

Yeah, I've got that feeling too, Pwalo.
There is one HP guy who seems to be a right a-hole though. I think we all know which one he is.

I've tried to remember rego's of cars a few times out on the bike, but usually forget them within 60 seconds as some eejit moves into my lane, or i have to avoid gravel etc etc etc. Maybe biker cops have better trained memories, but if he let you past I'd be feeling pretty safe that you won't get anything in the mail.

Thanks Squeak. As I said, I was going very quietly (more of a will to survival than anything else). He obviously figured I wasn't too much of a menace.

I passed that cop too, somewhere just near the interchange I think. Shot up behind, crawled past, waived, and kept going at a moderate pace. Must admit, I was a little more sedate this morning that I usually am, but still I thought it was worth a pull for. I'm wondering just what you do need to do these days to get pulled over. All these complaints about cops picking on people for the sake of it, I'm not seeing it lately around here.

Perhaps you didn't break a law.

hmm,..perhaps, but my understanding is lane-splitting is still a very grey area as far as the law goes.

Well my understanding of it is this:

If the cop feels like giving you a ticket, you will get a ticket.

No more explanation is required. Others can wank on all they like about "only do it at XX speed" and "only do it while positioned XXXX" and "don't do this" and "don't do that". But it all comes down to what mood the cops in. So if you can live with a ticket, split away. If you can't, don't split.
