I've seen a pair of dogs tear a possum apart, they dont give a shit about being inhumane, thats nature, what the differince from a couple of kids with a hammer? appart from the whinging hippies who feel guilty about it.

What would have happened if it had been hit by a car and crawled to the side of the road with it's guts hanging out bleeding to death? somehow i think the hammer would have been quicker, it's not like they strung it up on an old spring bed and feed it 50000 volts

Typical greenies. Years ago, decent prices could be had on possum skins so numbers were well down on what they are now. Then greenies go on about cruelty to animals and now we have 90 million of the vermin chomping there way through forest and orchards every night. Then they were selling them to China as apple eating tree bears, which looked to be a huge market. Meant to be great eating. That gets the thumbs down as well.

Every Greeny, needs a dozen poosums tossed into their apple tree. If they have no trees, then they need a dozen poosums tossed into their bed for the night. That will get them on the death to all possums band wagon.

Don't try and squash one on your motorbike, whatever you do.
I used to try and get my nightly shooting tally up by lining my cage up on every possum on the road after a hunt. I had a Laser 1300 about 15 years ago, saw a nice big possy ahead and lined the right side tyres up on the bugger.

Man, it was a big un and solid. Like hitting a brick twice. Car went budomp
budomp, bounced a bit and all seemed cool. Next day as I get into the car for work, I noticed both moulded, hard fixed plastic mud shields had been ripped clean off the car.

There IS no 'humane' way to kill one. Once they know they are in trouble they are quite hard to dispatch.

I have NO problem with older high school kids dispatching these things. I know thats not fashionable but I grew up in a city but in an age when it was quite common if you wanted a chicken dinner, well heres the axe and there is the chicken coop....

Look, these things are a bloody menace. They do so much damage to the bush and birds I don't care how you kill em, just kill the bloody things, rabbits too, and stoats and weasels and wasps. Kill em all on sight, no questions just kill em...

I can confirm this is a great way to despatch the furry little fuckers. On a still night it can sound just like a .22 super expediter when the skull explodes on a hard surface.

Bloody tree huggers!! The teacher should have grown some balls & done the deed him/herself.

That's where farm life is bloody good. We moved to the farm when I was about 8 I think and we were considered "townies" until we'd killed our own sheep. I used to check the traps (Gin) once a day (sometimes twice) and smack 'em on the head with a hammer - the babies too.
The farm is all about life and death. We even had a couple of pigs (in succession) they were both called Lunch - we were under no illusions. All town kids should experience the farm not just a day trip.

Uh, is not the "grab by tail" bit easier said than done ? My experience of these blighters up close is that they have several hundred razor sharp claws pointing in every direction, the strength of ten men and more teeth than a crocodile. And the contortionist ability of a ninja master.

I'd go with the "hit them with a long heavy thing" method. While wearing a suit of armour.

I've hit one maybe two on the bike, about the same as rabbits in that respect. (Ordinary rabbits, not the dreaded Kamikazi Bunny from Hell)

Not if you're quick. It's the all important "grab and swing". The momentum prevents the possum getting a chance to turn around & get you. You must hang on really tight too as the tail is quite slippery. Don't want it flying free mid-swing.

I got talked into using a humane trap last time we had one in our garden...

That actually gives you a bit of a problem because the while the trap is humane, there is no way I could think of the reach in and grab the bastard without getting mauled. The first one was half possum and half grizzly bear and had obviously been on the P all night.. Feckin Kujo ... It had a serious attitude problem and had not read the bit about us humans being top of the food chain...

Eventually I emptied the whole lot into a garbage bag and gassed it with the car exhaust which worked peachy but what a lot of shagging about and not particularly humane...

They are actually quite an adorable little creature in my opinion.

Holding down with a piece of wood and hitting over the head with a hammer is quite a humane way of dispatching the possum.

The "bashing over the head" method was quite popular in many of the Eastern European conflicts where the massacre of humans were desired.

This Politically Correct society is depressing.

They can be tamed, if taken as infants, and make good pets. I used as a boy to live next door to a chap who had a pet one, it rode around on his shoulder.

Paul's response is accurate. However your response is typical of an ignorant kiwi that doesn't have a single thought of their own and can only come up with "why don't you just leave then "

If you paid attention to what's going on in your country, you'd know that far too many contributing kiwi's are leaving NZ for various reason, all well founded. Labour is taking advantage of this (knowing that smart hard working people don't vote left and replacing them with a melting pot of refugees guaranteeing them a vote.

Moving to another country is on the cards but I'll wait until I've milked this place as much as I can. While my GF is from Sweden, she knows I'll never move to another country ruined by socialism, even though Sweden understands and works capitalism to it's advantage, it's still run by lefties and their tax system is really nasty.

I'm really concerned about the future of NZ. It scares me to think that if we're not careful, it'll become another third world pacific island. The worse thing is that a majority of kiwis either don't care or are too stupid to realise what's going on.
