I was told by the people i ride with that i was 'ready' for a bigger bike. Now i have to say im a bit crazy on the open road as a opposed to 'fast' but there is no doubt i could throw my 250 around, but to be honest thats easy compared to a bigger bike. Come out for a ride with N4CR and myself (he's on a 250C aswell) and if your pace is similar then you are probably alright to step up to a bigger bike as far as skill is concerned.
I've its that you want more speed in the straights then go for a 400, if you can ride the tyres off of it you will have no trouble beating a 600, perhaps you need to find some twistier roads because a 250 should piss all over a 600 in really tight stuff.
Speaking from experience a 600 is not really comparable to a 250 at all. There isn't usually that much more weight (eg. ZXR250A, which i previously had was 170kg wet, R6 is 188kg wet) and the power is 3-4 times what the ZXR had. This means you end up coming into corners a lot faster than you are used to and it takes a while to get the hang of it before your pace will be anything like it was.
If you really want feed back on whether you are 'ready' then it's best to go out on a ride, see where you are without trying too hard, and then see what people say on here when the ride is over.

Chicken strips are the unused part of your tyre, the part where you havnt leaned over far enough resulting in a strip of rubber around the tyre that hasnt made contact to the road...

Ok can anyone please give me more info on common 400's like ZXR 400 CBR 400 VFR 400 RVF 400 GSXR 400 or any other ones out there.
Who owns them and pro's and cons of the bikes eg. common probs with bikes, how hard would it be to find spare parts ect .. ? Any reviews online about them (Web Links), specs ect..production dates and ones available in NZ.
And most of all which 400 to get and why![]()

Well you've seen mine.
The ZXR 400s are great little bikes, very hard to find cheap parts for, and not particularly comfortable over any long distance.
But they look the part, and go fairly fast, so that's good enough for me.
I would look at a:
-ZXR400: Common bike, very strong motor (cam chain can be a problem) and has the most room... Stock it is the most powerful, but is slightly on the weighty side...
-VFR400 (NC30): Huge midrange power making it awesome for road riding. Not as much power as the ZXR but it is lighter in weight. Biggest con is it generally has a 18 inch rear rim making it a bitch to get good rubber for it...and it doesnt have alot of leg room (more than a 250 though)
-RVF400 (NC35): Slightly less power than the NC30 (very marginal though) biggest pro over the NC30 is that it has a 17 inch rear rim and its newer...
Biggest deciding factor... Licence.... After buying a brand new K5 GSX-R600, and crashing it on some oil mid corner... then spending 10 grand and 11 months fixing it because i only had a restricted licence... I would definately have a full licence and full insurance (if i did it again)
HP does not make you faster... To be fast you first have to be slow, and to get faster you have to be smooth and learn how to blend your braking, countersteering and throttle control into one (aswell as corner judgement) Thus it is possible to go faster and better than someone with moderate skills on a bigger bike.
But if the upgrade is really wanted. 400 is the best next step. 0-100kmh in just over 4 seconds, high 12 second 1/4 mile times and a top speed of about 220kmh...

In addition to what Two Smoker said:
The RVF I find it comfortable to ride all day as long as long as the roads have corners. If the road doesn't have corners, my legs fall asleap in the most horrible way. The clutch feels fine, but work it all day, every day, for over a week and you'll be going to sleep wincing in pain from your fucked left arm. If you get one, learn to clutchless as soon as your can an get into the habit. The gearbox is co-operatative to this sort of use once your get used to it. You go faster like that too.
Used parts are expensive and hardish to find. New parts don't seem to be a problem, but hold onto something firm when someone quotes your a price.
