I don't mind little bits of straights within the twisty bits. They kinda even out advantage and disadvantge between smaller and bigger bikes riding together.
I like to go up through Pukeiti and onto Wiremu rd,gets you right up in the cloud, very windy and narrow with steel mesh on wooden bridges, better when it was gravel of course. The roads off Wiremu down to the coast road can be fun - narrow and straight....uh...with S bends tossed in for no reason.Been caught out many times at silly speeds on those roads.

One of my favourite Taranaki rides is the south to north without riding SH3 from north of Mokoia to Waitara. Instructions follow if required!
Something else I did many years ago in a car, which I must repeat some day on a bike, is North Cape to Bluff without going through any traffic lights. I hope that this is still possible! The only tricky bit used to be catching the ferry southbound in Wellington. Bluff to North Cape without traffic lights used to be much simpler...

Yes please, any gravel?? Where do you come out??Originally Posted by Hitcher

Turn off right just south of the "Purple Palace" at Mokoia, than left almost immediately.
Follow the signs to Normanby, but take the NEXT right after the Tawhiti museum intersection.
The next left (I think) should drop you onto Mountain Road.
Take the next right which (I think) is Fraser Road. There is a T intersection at the end of this.
Turn right to Maata, and right again at the next T intersection.
Go over the Mangamingi Saddle (stunning views both ways on a fine day) and take the next left (the only left turn on what is otherwise a no-exit road).
This road takes you to Pukengahu, where you have two options: I recommend turning right. Both choices will eventually take you to the Skinner Road. (straight ahead at Pukengahu, if you miss the Skinner Road corner, brings you back onto SH3 at the Ngaere School).
Turn right onto the Skinner Road and proceed to the end -- another T intersection -- where you turn left towards Stratford (turn right and you end up in Taumarunui via Whangamomona).
About half a km later turn right into Beaconsfield Road.
Take the second right at the Stanley Road School and proceed to Te Popo.
Turn left and follow the signs to Ratapiko and then Tarata.
Ride through the Tarata village, take the next left and then left again (a right here takes you to Whangamomona via Matau and Pohokura -- another great ride!).
This road takes you to Tikorangi where you need to turn left, then right shortly afterwards which drops you down into the top of Waitara. Straight ahead at Tikorangi brings you back out onto SH3 just south of Motonui. Enjoy!!

Funny, I don't remember any features like this on this route. There are some interesting corners from Oakura to Okato but not much after that to worry about. No gravel anywhere. As for "needle in a haystack hairpins"...Originally Posted by Sk8r_Boi_

I suggested a while ago maybee having a forum with great biker roads on it--that sounds like a pretty darn good ride
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?
but then I think that's something common to all mountains - not just egganaki
My fav is the one up to the Mountain house - heading up Pembroke Road
Of note - and getting back to the original topic at hand, what's the road that goes out from Bell Block and connects onto Egmost Road - Connett Rd, or Borbett Road... one of those is a lot of fun too... I think it's the one that dives off near the Hen and Chickens hotel... (please don't tell me it is Hen and Chickens Road... I think it is and I live in fear of making an arse of myself - yet again!)![]()
