CF Can Cover

Ok so i was day dreaming at work today (as you do sometimes), and started thinking bout my bike (fxr one fiddy) and found my self pondering how i could tidy her up a bit, lets face it she aint really up to my standards with the first owner dropping it and doing an meataxe job of repairing it

So yes im shallow i like thing to be pleasing to the eye, if you know what i mean

so i thought I would start small and try my hand at a DIY can cover as my one is......well "ARSE" sums it up, here are a few teaser pics for you all so you can see where im going

Im just gonna replace the manky chrome can cover with a carbon fiber one thats the plan anyway when im finished

The carbon im using is a 196g twill weave (purely for looks) don really like the box weave which is what you would normally see, and to add a bit of strength to it im using 400g carbon double bias

Well i finished my cf cover tonight looks alot beter than the stock mangled one very happy with the results

Next i might try a faring see how that comes out .

How much did it all cost?. i know a replacement sheild is around $80
whichs is typical genuine parts rip off.

It prolly cost me a bit cheaper than that, but i did all the labour myself, so i saved there, would est about $40-50 in materials, hell the resin alone is $20 a liter @ cost feel sorry for any poor bugger paying RRP on it sheesh ! i started it monday night and did a bit each night after work so bout 2-3hrs work over 4 days (allowing for curing time )

hey an idea would be to create a new thread ask a mod to sticky it and go through a run through of how, where , when, why , cost of the whole process etc

I know I am keen on whipping up some CF stuff, and would whip out some green for a "How TO" thread

Looks real good by the way and like the use of the drainpipe as a mould

Yeah sure Im happy to give anyone advice on the wonderful world of compisit's, im sill learning myself, as if it goes wrong its an expensive fuckup!

As for the pvc pipe, i figured i can alway cut and polish the article if i comes out dull and the fact well have heaps of it laying round our factory @ work, so why make it any harder than it already is I say

next time you might ponder just using ornery glassfibrer on the inside and just the most outer , visible layer CF.
In this application there is no real strenght required anyway and whatever is needed is attained just by the halfpipe form itself........................
