    Question about helmets :)

    Hi guys

Do you reckon alot of helmet companies all get the same helmets from a huge supplier then sticker it with their own label and add a sh*tload of markup?

Im talking to a dude from China atm about helmets, he says their company is pretty big and supplies helmets for AVG, HEBO, OGK, UVEX etc. The name of the company is VR1 helmets.

The helmets have all the safety ratings and are made of a variety of materials (depending on price).

If they are the same quality as brand name helmets and i could save myself abit of $$ i would bring in a bunch of them and stick em on trademe or something

Hush up and go and wash your mouth out with soap! Don't say these things, some people here have paid a lot of money for the stickers on their helmets and don't need the likes of you deflating their egos.

China makes a shit load of stuff for major brands to label and package,I'd like a look inside their factories to see just what exactly they do ''make''.

LOL I would happily pay for the stickers if i could afford unfortunately im a poor unemployed student so i can forget about spending hundreds on a flash helmet (though im the first to admit that owning flash, expensive stuff is great ). Just tryin to get the best for my buck so to speak.

I didn't know male deer were able to ride motorbikes and if they could, would they be required by law to wear a helmet?

wouldn't be supprised if that was true though...eg, 'Nike's' and 'british' shoes are made in the same factory...with a price difference of about 70%...but how many people would choose nike's just to get that cool little tick?...a supprising number.. again, it's all about the look.

True the shells may all be made alike/from the same factory, but it is the inside that makes the difference. There was areport done a year or two ago that although arai & shoei etc... top of the line helmets are preferred the less expensive ones actually tend to cause less damage to the brain. It has to do with the padding inside the helmet.

I don't know about the others but I do know that Shark's mid to top range helmets are all made by hand with interwoven carbon fibre.
Shark also incorporates a crumplezone system that is unique to the Shark Helmet. The Visor locking system is unique, as is the ventilation system.

I wouldn't be suprised if plastic outer casings were mass manufactured and then the individual helmet companies fit the interior linings, vents, visor locking and graphics.
This will still provide for a different helmet, fit, comfort and protection & performance from each manufacturer.

However, I would be very suprised if you'd find the top line name brand helmets partaking in this.

As can be seen from the results, the cheaper helmets appear to offer better protection through being less stiff.

A great many of the name brands do not have manufacturing facilities. They design a helmet and contract an outside source to manufacture them.
It doesn't mean lesser quality, just cheaper helmets due to economies of scale.
    Welcome to the new reality.

Thanks for all the info, interesting read about the cheaper helmets being safer due to more give...i guess at the end of the day it all comes down to how well the helmet fits your head.

one thing to check if your buying helemts on line / abroad is where they were originally intended for. the companies (i definetly know of Arai) seem to do a few basic head shapes depending where they sell them.
Amercian market ones are generally larger, and wider chinned, asian market ones are rounder, european ones are more oval.

The sizes are all listed the same though, so for a Medium there are at least three different ones available online....it's not as simple as try on a lid locally in a shop, then buy it online at the same size and expect the same fit.

Depends where your genetic origins lie really, my mate just bought a lid online from the far east, becasue he is of chinese origin and the local ones don't fit him well.

Thanks for the tip! I think i have quite a long head (that sounds weird) because a M helmet fits, but it sits quite high up compared to my brothers helmet which sits lower down and covers more of my head. Ill be sure to check the sizing before i buy
