    Harley imports.

Thinking of buying a jap import harley, i have seen a few good deals with low millage, are these bikes assembled in japan, should i steer clear of these imports and just go to a well known bike shop like amps or wellington motorcycles.Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You should only get an amercian harley. The NZ ones are assembled in Invercargill, Australia - Hobart, Iran - Tehran. Stay away from imports!

The only way to get a genuine harley is to export them. To do this you must first take buy one in the US and then export it to NZ. Do not import them.

Sometimes dealers like AMPS get exported harleys and they are a bit more expensive than the imported ones but are much better.

The majority of WMCCs used HArleys are Jap imports. Go for it. You get exactly the same bike, with fuck all mileage. There's bargains to be had alright.

The beauty of buying a Jap import HD from a reputable dealer, is you know it's been well checked and sorted for vinning.

I always thought that if the product was not made in NZ then it is IMported. No matter where it was originally made/assembled. Was I wrong?
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

You get what you pay for dude. The thing is the Japs don't really look after them, they just ride them and after a couple of years and then ditch them. Half of them have probably never even had an oil change. Most of the Japs don't have garages and their bikes just get left out in the pollution and acid rain. All of the Jap import bikes I've seen have been pretty corroded and unloved looking, I wouldn't touch one myself.
If you are unfazed by all of that, don't try bringing one in yourself, better to approach a bike shop and let them sort it out for you. The risk is on them if when it arrives it transpires that it has a bent frame or poked motor or something.
All HDs are assembled in America as far as I know. I'd say better to get one imported from there. They have a waiting list for new Harleys (it is actually easier to get an international spec'd one outside the US than to buy one in the US), if they get one they feel privileged and as such will generally look after them reasonably well.

as far as i know the only american bike ever "built" in invercargill was burt munros indian

    Hd's are shipped already assembled

Apart from minor differences between specs for various countries the major difference is in the 17 digit vin #, american spec bikes start with a 1 and exported bikes start with a 2

We have both NZ new and Jap import HD's to sell.
They come from the same factory and we offer exactly the same warranty with either.
If it's a nice bike, and the model you want....buy it.
Feel free to get hold of me at WMCC (or just PM me) if you want me to send you an up to date stock list of what we've got, and what's coming soon.
We've just knocked thousands off several good low k bikes.

I read somewhere once that a lot of HD parts are manufactured in Japan and shipped to USA for assembly - anyone know if that's true?
