    Bike kinda running funny

    Hi everyone,

My FXR over the last month or so has started to run a wee bit strange. Its seemed to lost almost all of its power just below 8000RPM. Its only really noticable in 6th gear, where acceleration below 8k is almost non-existant(even with the throttle fully open), then it gets a boost of power at about 8k, the exhaust note changes and we're away laughing.

It always had a boost of power above 8k, but never so gutless below. Kinda hard to describe, but is sort of like driving with the choke on. The spark plug is new, air filter is new, done about 9k, and runs fine otherwise.

    Ideas anyone?

    Stefan

    Arrow Hmm.

Is it time for a tune up? Can't say I have anything else sensible to say. Has anything else happened to the bike at all to coinside with the unusal running of the bike? There are quite a few KBers with the same model of bike, so hopefully they have something helpfull to say.

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm near positive that the problem here is that the bike is an fxr.
I too have one, and below 8000 in 6th I'm decelerating no matter what, they're just not a powerful bike.
And if you had an intermittent headwind on this occasion...

Unless it's pokey in all the gears I wouldn't worry.

Its definitly worse than it used to be, sometimes its very difficult to get it up to 8k in 6th gear(about 90km/h), but as soon as it does it gets a sudden increase in power and I have to throttle back to normal, to cruise along at 100+. Nothing else seems to have happened to the bike, it runs normally otherwise. Strange...

I am wondering if its something to do with the carbie, i'm thinking the diaphram may need a wee look at. Would this seem a good place to look for trouble?

    Cheers,

    Stefan

Did they just charge only for the new foam element or the whole air box?
Or did you get something else?
    Thanks

As for the loss of power, my bike also has a soft spot just below 8k rpm and is only noticable in 6th gear too. Runs sweet otherwise. Have absolutely no idea regarding a fix or cause.

The air filter set me back $40(just the foam element inside), which is a complete rip off. Apparently the local bike store couldn't source a genuine part,so the filter I got was an aftermarket substitute, or so they tell me.

Meths mixes very nicely with petrol but meths also absorbs water!

Therefore, if there's a small amount of water pooling at the bottom of your tank, on reserve the engine gets fed from there, it'll be removed and passes harmlessly through. Pour about a cup of meths to a tank. It's a good thing to do once in a while.

Its also a good idea to periodically run on reserve even if you don't need to. Just remember to switch it back before you run dry for obvious reasons.

If the problems only become noticeable after it was in the shop for filter etc praps they haven't quite got it together right (airfilter not sealing or something?)

Well we seem to have sorted the problem. I took my bike round to a mates, and he gave the carbie a clean out, and adjusted the spark plug, and everything seems to be normal now. When we took the top off the carb, the diaphragm looked like it was not fully sealing in one spot, so that probably was the problem.

    Cheers everyone,

    Stefan
