Shell Fuel Rip Off

I've only had two tanks of the new Shell in the GS1200 so far, and that was mainly commuting. I appear to be getting 5 - 10% less distance from each tank so far, but I'll get a better idea after an extended run.

havent even tried it...and wont. i work for bp, and so buy from them too...only once have i put another companys fuel in scuffys tank.

fatjim....information centers have free maps....ive got a map for every inch of new zealand, all from the information center. i always feel sorry for people who buy maps from us....i do make a point of giving out the free city ones if they are from out of town.

I have used Shell 96(95) Octane in my company car since March 2005. I drive about 1000 kms a week.

Back in March 05 I was getting 800 kms to 70 ltrs of the stuff........ Their new fuel efficiency formula now gets me a whopping 800 kms to 70 ltrs.

Man I am on to a winner.

I've been noticing weird mileage... Always use Shell... Last stop on the way home... Sometimes I'll get 180 before the fuel light comes on, sometimes 220... Where did that 40ks of gas go ? I'm not riding any differently ? Maybe riding into the wind ? who knows ? It's a pretty big difference.

IIRC all the petrol companies ship their stuff in, it goes into the same storage tanks, they just put it in different trucks.

So, basically, the petrol companies don't sell the product, only the distribution experience.

sedge...one of the guys that came into work on a bike said riding into the wind burned more fuel....he had to put in more than he expected, so thats maybe where its gone. i dont really keep an accurate record of when i fill/how many k's. generally when i am filling it going on a trip out of town, so fill, travel, return home, burn the remainder off commuting, then fill for travel again.

It's a bit odd though... None of my other bikes were like this ? I've been riding >100ks a day for years on all sorts of bikes.... Maybe it's a v-twin thing ? (first one I've had) Or fuel injected thing ? (first one I've had too)

Only noticed it since March.

But a 20% difference over two days ? Ah well... Maybe the fat bits stick out around the edges on some days more than others...

Slightly off topic but the only fuel that didnt cause my cage to register unsuitable knock levels on the ecu was mobil 98 and the gull 95 or 96 or whatever the shit it is... never had much luck on bp,shell,caltex or regular mobil. It was tuned aggresively though, but goes to show you some fuel brands seem to work better in some situations~~~

I definitely reckon wind has a lot to do with it.. considering when i was on the Hamilton ride on Sunday, with Flux in front of me, I think he had his throttle wide open (kr150), I had mine wide open too, and every time i put my body/head down (minimizing drag), i would gain on him quite a bit

proving: less drag = better fuel consumption

If you're going to compare fuels you've got to run tests under a contolled environment. There's no controlled enviroment here on KB. "I once changed into 4th at 8527 rpms instead of my usual 4126 rpm's and had to fill up at Birkenhead instead of Northcote." If you want to start talking about rip offs, start talking about this government who over taxed us 6 billions dollars last year and murders people on waiting lists and teaches 10 year olds who can't count who to spell "Treaty of Waitangi"

Thought about it but I wouldn't last 5 minutes. Kiwi's would have to be responsible and accountable for their own actions and we know that would go down like Dovers GSX.

We don't ride our bikes under a comtrolled environment. We ride them in all different ways: commuting; touring; hooning; heavy traffic; light traffic etc. We ride in all types of weather conditions and with all types of riding styles.

A test under a controlled environment just tells what fuel is better in that particular environment, not what is better overall. A general feeling that a paticular fuel is better or worse than it used to be can tell us much more than a controlled test.

As I have already said, my feeling is that after two tanks I am getting less mileage per tank than I used to, but I'll reserve judgement until after an extended ride.
