Buy a damaged bike... they are cheap. If you're an apprentice mechanic, it will make the fixing of it good practise, and extremely cheap. Thats how I got onto an OK 250 (well, bar the physical mechanical work myself - wouldn't trust myself on that).
Just make sure what you get is repairable for relatively cheap dollars. You don't want to be looking at stuff that has a cracked frame etc.

I honestly cannot figer it out why secondhand bike prices have to be so high. My last bike, a 4 year old gs 500 now standsfor sale in a Bike shop for more than it was sold brand spanking new. Admitedly the price had been reduced from recommended retail but then suzuki always does this.
One side of the coin I spouse we are happy that our rides keep their value so nicely but on the flip side I have no idea why and nobody has ever managed to give me a satisfactory explanation. They do crank them out by the 10s of thousands surely and I never heard about a world wide shortage of bikes.
So go figure .................
It's real simple why 250s are so overpriced, or any bike that appeals to "new" riders in general. Because "new" riders don't know enough about the market to know what is value. Many also have a deathly fear of their license conditions, and so believe that a) they must buy something under 250cc, and b) that grossly overinflated price must be the going rate so I must therefore pay it. And they do pay it. So that means most other people in the market including you (unless you get real lucky) will have to pay it too.
Personally, I started on a 1990 FZR400 with 24k on it that I bought from a mate who'd had it since 12k many years before. I paid $3k. I sold it for $2k a year later, not because I couldn't get higher, but 'cos I could give some KBer a good deal and didn't care about losing a grand in return for having a line of buyers waiting to throw cash at me. But for $3k I had a bike that whipped the 250s, handled 2-up riding with my partner on the back, looked like a "real" bike, and cost me less than some thrashed and crashed old 250 would.
I never got stopped in the 8k(?) I did on it, and only got chased 3 times. Even as a learner I was no angel. 1 was a deliberate wind up and the other 2 were 'cos I was speeding. So the moral is had I not been doing something obvious I never woulda have had a problem. Even obtained an exemption from the then LTSA to do my CBTA restricted and full on the 400c.
I'm 5'11, 80kg. I loved the 400.
Not as much as I love the 636 though - but you gotta do your time somewhere![]()

Thats a some really valid points you both have there and im now lookning at 400 but even some of them are overpriced but you get tht in any market. Im not gonna buy a 250 if its overprice. the point of a bike is cheap transport that is fun. So maybe after this there will be a drop in the market.....to optimistic i reckon

On the brighter side you shouldn't lose any money when you onsell it to the next gullible newbie.Personally I would just take a while and see whats around, that bargain will be out there waiting (just after you've given up and brought one
).
LOL i was offered a VT250 the one with fairing. For $600 all i had to do is replace the sprocket bearing(take the motor apart to reeplace one bearing. But i said no, was i smart?
Yeah since i have no money its easy to wait
