I can't hassle Ducati owners any more...

Well, the 1198/1098 sure is a nice piece isn't it? I mean it's slow in comparison to a Gixer Thou; but it really has something, doesn't it.

It's skinny, and I found that I slid forward onto the strangely pointed tank, but they're an experience to ride...

So, apologies to all you amateur mechanics (AKA Ducati owners) that I've offended by mocking.

Hmm, how come KTM can't get the throttle to work like a Ducati?

It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

The flow characteristics of a 75 degree vee twin make it impossible to produce the same consist fueling characteristics of a 90 degree vee twin...I mean everyone knows that!

At least all the 990 owners do......

As for getting a ride on a 1098, barsteward.

How come we don't see more of them at the tracks if they are that good?

:slap: Coz then it wouldn't be a KTM any more, it would be a bloody Ducati, wouldn't it?

I believe, having spoken to someone riding an RC8, that it walks right on by the 1098, drafting isn't really necessary apparently...

Ah huh... And if Suzuki produced a $34000 GSXR-1000, they'd wipe the floor with the 1198.

We could argue this forever - and will! - so here is another comparison from Motorcycle.usa for times on various tracks http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/9/475/...ackdown-V.aspx

The whole article on all 5 bikes is worth reading but the essence of it is two of the five writers - who have a racing pedigree - picked the 1098.

    Why am I not surprised........

$34k buys the entry level one, it doesn't get interesting until $41k - 1098R.

If you took a GSXR1000 and spent money on carbon wheels, full Ohlins, Brembos all around, Yoshi everything else, you'd still be able to fly to Vegas for one hell of a weekend with drugs and hookers...

But, the 1098/1198, it is a class act...

But the R model is not legit in NZ superbike rules from what I've understood, so you can't really race it.

If you were to race a S model, then again the NZ rules stop you from changing the most basics chassis stuff that seems to be the norm at other places where they are being raced. (if I'm reading the NZ rules correctly)

So are they just overpriced poser machines built for the street?

Not even the $70k R model comes with the chassis setup the corse RS bikes are using.

(Don't get me wrong, I'd love to trash one at a track, but there must be a good reason no one does it?)

    Ah, you're right...

I'd be looking at the base 1098/1198. Going to Bologna in a month to see the factory... I'll ask them why the R is so damned expensive for so little extra return...

    1x Oriental 1k IL4, $22k
    BST wheels, $8k
    Ohlins front $16k
    Ohlins rear $3k
    Yoshi everything $6k

    A $55,000 GSXR1000. Nice

I can't totally agree. I has a lot of pretty elements, but it ultimately just looks like a tarted up 916, and a bit rushed to market. I expect that it'll have brought them enough time and R&D revenue for the next one to be a real corker though It's a bit sad when most of the loveliness comes from the bolt ons that come with it, rather than the bike itself.

/edit: Probably the best thing going for the 1098 series is that it's pretty conventional looking, at a time when the Japs are trotting off down some really weird routes... ZX10R indicators anyone?
