    found some 2005 facts,
    It is perfectly legal to import, export, manufacture, repair and service radar detectors "in all states in Australia", except Victoria.
    Contrary to what you have read or heard, ownership is NOT illegal in any state.
    Possession in Victoria is, no matter where it came from!
    Eastern states have different laws effecting selling or using detectors "in that state".
    Each state law, applies to that state only.

    wtf? illegal in victoria? does that still apply??? O.o

    I think:
    - You will also find that the use of a radar detector in NSW is a VERY large fine.
    - They even confiscate it on the spot.
    - 100% ILLEGAL.
    - They even employ detector detectors.

    Lived in Adelaide from 85 till 98 . Was told they were illegal so didn't bother. I never ever saw one one while living there.

    I did get my first camera fine there in 88 and not much later was told to remove a bit of plastic that had somehow been attached !!!!!! to cancel out one digit on the plate at 45 degrees (about the angle the cameras worked at the time) G.

    move to NT

    I am heading to Darwin as soon as my house is sold (wife is there already)... Apparently no speed limits, have to be on the lookout for wildlife and trucks though!

    A question, can I use a NZ bought GPS in Aus?

    110kph is the maximum open road limit, nationally - whether it's sign posted or not.

    I got followed/travelled with a highway patrol for 3 hours in the absolute middle of nowhere once.

    Sorry, my sense of humour ! When cameras first came out in Adelaide the trick was stick something on your plate at 90 degrees ! The cameras were on a tripod on the footpath from memory and you could block one digit or letter so they couldn't get the full number. It was outlawed and you were fined shortly afterwards.
    BTW go to Adel, best roads thru the hills and also fine weather !!!!! G.

    open speed limit on NT roads!

    Well, in the local vernacular:
    'Tell 'im 'es dreamin'.'

    Not true!
    I am leaving for Darwin on 1 July, have done a bit of research and found the following:

    Speed
    Restricted speed limits apply in all urban areas, and there are speed cameras in the main centres. There is no speed limit on open roads, although travellers should drive at a speed that suits the road, vehicle, weather condition and their driving experience.

    and

    Australia
    Speed limits in Australia range from 40 km/h (25 mph) to 110 km/h (70 mph) at 10 km/h intervals. Generally:

    * School zones are 40 km/h (25 mph) during school hours, except in South Australia, where they are 25 km/h (15 mph). This speed limit is also enforced in some shopping precincts.
    * Suburban roads are 50 km/h (30 mph) in most states.
    * Major suburban routes are 60 km/h (40 mph).
    * Major connector roads and smaller highways are 80 km/h (50 mph).
    * Highways and freeways are 100 km/h (65 mph).
    * National highway routes are 100 or 110 km/h (65–70 mph).

    Some states do not have 50 km/h zones, and those that do have only introduced them in recent years.

    It is not uncommon to see 70 km/h and 90 km/h limits on some roads, where a higher limit is deemed too dangerous, yet a lower limit is unreasonable for the traffic.

    The Northern Territory is an exception, as there is no speed limit on the highways.

    Speed traps are used in almost all areas of the country. Tolerance is from 8% to 10% in most states but only 3 km/h in Victoria, an issue which has caused a lot of controversy.

    Will be signing in from Aus as soon as I arrive there, have a GS1200 lined up for a test ride on Monday 3 July!

    Till later

    Good luck - you'll need it.
    The national Speed limit on ALL roads is 100kph Unless signposted otherwise.
    BTW - There are very few sealed roads in the NT other than the National Hwys.

    Detector detectors use a system called VG2, many high end detectors are immune to this.
    But I won't buy another one for you if they getcha.
    Speed doesn't kill people.
    Stupidity kills people.
