Went out on the Red Z this afternoon; getting the running in process out of the way. Over the Paekak Hill and back via Whitby. Coming back thorough Whitby I heard a strange metallic clanking noise coming from the back somewhere. I stopped and looked at the rear tyre; it wasn't flat and there appeared to be no damage or anything else hanging loose. I went on cautiously and the noise seemed to dissappear; I thought perhaps a stone had lodged in the tread at low speed and as I sped up a little, it dislodged and all was well.

Not quite trusting that all was in fact well, I kept the speed down to around 75 - 80k. Sure enough, about a couple of k's up the road the handling started feeling a little odd; as though the rear tyre was about 10 cm wide and unstable. This quickly turned into a feeling that the air was disappearing fast. I stopped and a flat tyre quickly revealed itself.

I had hardly finished inspecting the tyre and starting the process of calling Honda Riders Club callout service when a Total Tyres guy driving past stopped and offered to check things out. He turned on his truck mounted compressor, inflated the trye and a hole in the tyre was quickly found. A temporaty puncture kit was then produced, inserted and the trye topped up and I was on my way. Inside 10 minutes of stopping.

I agreed to the temporary patch being used even though the tyre has only 400k on it as my understanding is that tyre replacement is almost inevitable in the event of punctures. So the downside of using the patch (apparently it makes repairs difficult) is low.

Anyway, the Total Tyres guy would not take any payment, did a great job and happened along at the perfect time. And it was about to start raining - I got home moments befoeer it did so.

If you need mobile tyre repairs (hopefully only for your car - for those that have to have them) - remember Total Tyres. Highly recommended.

Ohhh and that was nice of him aye........ pitty your gona have to spend 250 on a new tyre and the Z1 looks bloody sweet in red but that seat looks a bit sus!

That's fantatstic. I've written the number down to go on the list of emergency numbers. They deserve to be paid!

Perhaps dropping off a dozen beer at the shop (or having it couriered over, or buying it on line & having Liquor King??? deliver it) would be appropriate? Because that service is above & beyond the call of duty, and so many people would not have even bothered to stop, especially if they didn't have to. And don't forget to make sure that his boss knows what a great employee he's got!

As to replacement of tyres after punctures. If the repair is made from the inside, then you can expect the tyre to last until the tread wears away. I'd still look into having the temporary puncture removed & a permanent fix made because it'd be waaaay cheaper than replacing an almost brand new tyre. No harm in enquiring!

I like Slim's suggestion of having a "little something" delivered to the shop. I think that's excellent service.

I've not heard of Total Tyres but have made a note.

As far as I know there is no permanent fix for a bike tyre..... or at least there is no one out there (at a shop) prepaired to do this to a bike tyre as for me theres no way I'm gona ride a bike with over 100hp at speeds that we arnt ment to do on a repaired tyre... it isent worth thr risk bin it, the tyre that is :-)

you can do a proper permanent repair in a motorcycle tyre,the area in which you can repair is very limited though.

Fu*k there is nothing wrong with a repaired tyre if it is done properly with a tubeless boot (has a big flat pad on the inside wall of your tyre with a rubber gromit going through the hole) and the puncture is not in the side walls. I am running a P Diab on the rear that had a double puncture (two in the same tyre at the same time, both near the centre of the tyre) on the same day that I got it fitted. I had done temp repaired to get a friend's for the night and had gone to Leading Edge (were I had got the Tyre) the next day and got it repaired properly. This repair will last the life of the tyre. I have had this type of repair done on a least two other occations (one at Dury Tires and one at a local garage). I always watch the repair they do and make sure they only use the tubeless boot method (this by the way is the only permant repair that should be use by respectable tyre service centres on any tubeless tyre).

OK I stand corrected thanks, The last time this happened to me I was in Brissie on the south side and I had a brand new D207 puncher and out of the 11 shops in a row no one was prepaired to fix it...... maybe the hole was just to big.
Road that D207 on a 97 VFR for 80km 2 up at 60-80 kph toataly flat and only bottomed out once (another reason why they may not of wanted to fix it) rather amazing realy that the handling was so good.
