Dick Huurdeman speaks at Diabetes Wellington AGM

Just received a flyer from Diabetes Wellington.

Following the Diabetes Wellington AGM, Dick Huurdeman, motorcyclist and diabetic will be speaking about his motorcycle trip on a Norton from Beijing, China to Anaheim in Holland (20,000 km).

Those those of you like myself who live with motorcycling and diabetes, this could be an interesting talk.

    AGM:

    Monday 3 July 2006
    Petone Rugby Club,
    55 Udy Street
    Petone
    7.30pm - 9.00pm (Dick Huurdeman talk following).

RSVP attendance to Diabetes Wellington Inc
    PH 499 5085, diab.wgtn@xtra.co.nz by Thursday 29 June 2006
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

    Hmmm. No bites.

Maybe you don't recall these guys.

Think "The Long Way Round" but with two Kiwi codgers (one 52, one 75) who took some old bikes a long, long way.

    See Close Up's story here:

Erm well yes.... As Vice pres of Diabetes Wellington I may just have had something to do with this... ah hemm

I have a passion for the non technical side of diabetes....

    Any way...

Des is writing a book (released soon) on the trip and should enough KB memeber be interested in a special evening I'd be more than happy to approach the gruesome twosome and see if we could make it 'special'?

    Look at it this way....

    You missed Bert Munro ....

    John Britten is gone....

DON'T miss these guys! They have done something really amazing and are continuing to do it as well....

If 10 of you post here and are keen on a KB night I will find a way to pay for it!!

    Paul N

ps - one member who has NEVER even ridden a bike emailed me and asked me IF this presentation would be recorded....

Dick used to be Robert Holdens mechanic for years when Robert raced Ducatis, this guy has forgotton more about racing than most will ever know. He is a legend, once heard a story where he straightened out a conrod on the side of the road using a rock. Go see him if you can!

    Hence I'm NOT kidding!

Dick is recovering from a stroke and is in his 70's...... Honestly, If I was half the dude this guy is... well.. The man is a GENTLEMAN motorcyclist of the FIRST degree...

Anyway, I'll put my arse and some $$ on the line to give you slobs a chance to meet genuine biking royalty... (even if they don't know it)

Post here if you are keen...

Me keen too. Are we meant to turn up for the AGM or do we just turn up for the talk afterwards?

That would be pretty cool. Then it wouldn't feel like we were crashing someone elses party.

Dick is a great guy. I used to sit with him and chew the fat. He actually put the pickups for the ignition on the ducati on the clutch basket and he enjoyed pointing out the stuff he had built on the bike.

I seem to recall he was also a very keen hunter. he was twice my age at the time and he used to tell stories about lugging deer up and down hills. I recently had to carry two hind quarters of a red up and down some paddocks and it just about wasted me!

Well this might be a better go then... (from Des) Re the launch of the movie / docco about the trip.

I will be sending you a poster next week, but the venue for the
'premiere' (only showing) is The Paramount Theatre on Courtney Place on
Sunday 16th July with some drinks and nibbles from 6.00 pm with showing
maybe 6.45 or so. It will double as the book launch and will be $20 per
head. All the main characters in the tale will be there, me, Dick, Steve,
Penelope and Dutch Courage. We will be encouraging folk to bring their
bikes. I am trying to see if we can't do something in way of parking in
Blair or Allen Sts. I will be sorting out some security guards for the
    hesitant.

So.. This might be a good KB event!

Well.. I'm pretty sure he needs to sell a few books and DVD's to fund his adventures so if you can provide an audience.. We can but ask?

    Cheers

Pity I couldn't go to the AGM, it would have interesting from both a biking point of view and a diabetes point of view.

Good to know I'm not the only one on KB who has Diabetes.
