Where are you in Auckland?? I'd find some diagrams off the net and see if you can find the problem seal.

Does sound like a crank seal.

    Schematic for your bike

now the seal on the bottom of the crank on the right hand sode is more than likely to be the problem. lie the bike over and you can take the side cover off with out draining the gearbox oil (If you haven't done the gearbox oil, you should just drain it then cause it will probably need replacing).

now with the side cover off, look at the seal and if it's smoking like your saying, it's probably chewed out, you can just leaver it out (make sure you look at which way it goes in) and place a new one in. I'd personally do the mag one too, but it would tell you if that is the problem pretty quickly.

Is it smoaking all the time or only when you open it up?

With sympathy, sounds like youve had a pretty bad time of it. Anyway, simple to check, is the gearbox oil level going down???? If so, then yep, seals-& the smoke is usually totally eco unfriendly toxic white blue & thick. If not, where did the broken reed get to? probably straight through the engine- Im assuming youve got good compression- no? then odds on that the rings are fubarred too.

Golly with a bike of that age it will kill you on the price. There is a place i Oz that quoted me around $300 inc shipping to get my RM done.

    Have a look at Ebay.

I have just been doing the same thing myself. Best price so far is from Stack and Weston in Tangimoana. Paul 06 324 8051 (no I do not know where that is either?) Wairarapa somewhere???
    Resleeve 367.00
    Piston kit 170.00
    rod kit 176.00
    main bearings and seals 87.00
    All including GST
I checked him out with a friend and his rep is okay

There are no second hand bits around for the air cooled motors that I can find. Its 20 years old now. Let me know if you find something you do not want for yourself

Let me know if you want to sell the bike as I might be interested?
    Cheers

    Good luck
I'm one of the worlds best riders. I can wheelie, I can stoppie, I can stunt, hell I can get my shoulder down. I could keep up with Rossie if I wanted to race.

Then I go from bed to bike and somehow it all turns to crap.
