    (09) Route to Manfeild for KB Day discussion

I see that Desert Road is still closed. My preferred route to Manfeild from Auckland is via Matamata/Taupo/Waiouru as this has nice open roads and hardly any hills or towns which is ideal as my car will be loaded up and pulling a trailer.

I was planning to leave AKL at about Fri 11am with the aim of getting through Desert Rd/Waiouru area before it gets dark.

Should I carry on going AKL/Matamata/Taupo/Waiouru and just go with the detours i.e. Turangi/National Park/Ohakune/Waiouru?

Or should I go the AKL/Ngaruawahia/TeKuiti/National Park/Ohakune/Waiouru way?

I'm loathe to go the Te Kuiti way as it is very windy and hilly with hardly any passing lanes but in saying that I haven't been that way for some years so maybe its better now?

If you're towing SH3 then SH4 aren't going to be much fun. Going to Napier will suck temporarily in comparison.

texmo, gwintchy, sudeep and myself are going via napier tonight will post tomorrow how the roads are and also how long extra it is.

at the moment roads closed are:

    wairau and taihape closed.

    rangipoe and taihape closed

National park between 41 and 47 closed

    Ratahei, Taumaranui and Wanganui closed.

So basically sh4 and sh1 are screwed passed taupo. Good luck and drive safe.

where opinion holds more weight than fact.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

Its snowing on the Napier Taupo road but still open at this stage , Weather is supposed to deteriorate a little here tommorrow , if that closes then it will be no fun for you , should be OK during the day.
There is even snow I am told at Norsewood between Napier and Palmerston North.
I have my trusty Back Road map ready

We are taking a trailer and planning to leave West Auckland about 11 am on Friday also, though I have a couple of small detours to make on the way out of town.

    We normally go National Park.

    Ak to Manfield

Going via Ngarawhahia, Pirongia, Otorohanga, TeKuiti, Waitara, Inglewood, Hawera, Wanganui, Feilding is 7 hours comfortable & good roads.

Seen the news tonight? Doubt you will be going that way. Taumaranui > South is closed. Rangipo - Taihape is closed. Paraparas closed. Ohakune - Waiouru closed. Taupo - Napier marginal with worse predicted tomorrow. EDIT: Just been closed (6.30pm)
Best plan to go thru Taranaki

Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
