The root of the problem is:
Insufficient govenment funding and hospitals managed by accountants.
Nothing wrong with the standards of care professionally - same as OZ - they have a combined college of surgeons - the govt just doesn't give enough $ to fund the health service and the bean counters have now 'audited' pain. That is why co-pilot left and won't go back to public health. She wouldn't apply the money based triage.
Remember when the Matron ran the hospital - now it's a business manager - with possibly no clinical acumen at all.
Private insurance is mandadtory for over 26ers now. Thaz the fax jack because for once I agree with the doomsayers - it's a right royal fuck up Arthur.
And that's not even starting on the asshole orthapedic surgeons with the god complex.
All the ones I see at my work are.The ONLY people who owe me money are Islanders. And yet 20 yrs ago when I ran a workshop in Mangere they all paid up front with cash.Originally Posted by WINJA

Apart from that it's just down to lack of funding. and your point on where they spend it. 'taxpayers' would make me happier too - but then you start putting a $ on humanitarian values - which is part of the argument to begin with.
The aus system of Medicare - 1.5% tax levy works really well. (compared to here)
We used to have exactly such a system here. One shilling and sixpence in every pound. Worked well. Until the Treasury thieves got there hands on it and it sunk into the Consolidated Fund, never to be seen again. Just like the fuel tax, originally to pay for roading. And when we had elected Roads Boards (who remembers them ? they did a damn good job) it did just that.Originally Posted by Big Dave

My 2 cents
1 ACC = doctors no longer can be sued for personal injury in NZ = major stuff ups being covered up and poorly compensated for by ACC. If doctors and hospitals could be sued for millions they would take more care.
2 If money spent on health insurance could be claimed back in taxes then more individuals / businesses would purchase it, and leave the public system to take care of those that cannot afford it. And we would have a larger private system offering more services.
Our politicians need to take a long hard look at why we have a 3rd World Health system and what we are doing differently than other countries to lead to this situation. And the cost of not treating people in ACC payments, Sickness Benefits and lost productivity as well as the human cost.
(I'm a former nurse so I have seen the rot from the inside..)
