    I believe that you are incorrect, as the examples given by other members demonstrate.

    Although this is a general "rule", I am under the understanding that the pronunciation is dependent on whether the word is of Latinate or Germanic origin.





    (Note that this neatly sidesteps the fact that "Gixxer" is hard to fit into either of these categories...that is an argument for the rest of you! )
