Unhappy Car vs Bike @ Mana Esplanade

My wife saw the aftermath of a car vs. bike at Mana Esplanade (Mana/Porirua) about 4pm today. Rider didn't look too flash apparently. Anyone know the poor bugger?

All my wife knows is that it was black. God bless her, she was watching the road. There were apparently a few Cruiser type sickles gathered.

    It was a black Harley.
The rider did not look too flash when I went through. The ambo's looked a little concerned.
I was coming back from Plimmerton & I thought I was a mate of mine, call his place to see if he was at home & no he wasnt.... (Gulp) was out.. I asked if the was riding & no he took the cage out. (phew!)
One of those really sick to the stomach moments for a little while there.
Never good to see a rider down.
May the road rise up to meet you.

I went through just before the Ambo turned up. Looked like there where heaps of witnesses and they had the rider wrapped up in a blanket. A cop pulled up just as I was leaving Shell. Saw 2 more cops racing south just as I was getting to Pukerua Bay.

I was headed home from doing a charity gig and all I saw was half the bike on a flat deck and the front end on the deck.. egad... Like em or loathe em, I'd imagine it takes a fair old whack to rip the front end off a HD.

Hope the rider is OK. I saw a whole lot of HD's headed north on SH1 as I was going in just before lunch time

Happened Just outside work (Sandbar) just before I turned up, it was a Black HD, rider went through the intersection and collided with a Celica driven by a young girl, Rider was dazed and had biten off part of his tongue and was missing a few teeth as he was wearing a Skull Cap apart from a few cuts etc... did not appear there were any more serious injuries, Bike was a Write off and the front detached, appeared that the bike came from the hills at Camborne through the intersection and the car was turning right from the Sandbar towards Porirua and collected him.

My partner and I were first on the scene. We had just left the pub and were about to cross the road at the crossing. The bike came from Porirua way and collided with the car right in front of us. He didnt' stand a chance. The car spun around and almost ended up running over the poor guy. The first thing we did was get the driver to move back.
He was very quiet at the beginning, then started breathing very strangely. He was on his back at that point so I turned his head to one side to drain a huge amount of blood that had gathered in his mouth. We didnt' want to move him too much in case we did any more damage.
After a few minutes he stopped breathing and we panicked a bit. We turned him over into the recovery position and I opened his mouth to make sure his airway was clear. As soon as I did that he started breathing again. After that he started coming round and over the next 10 mins became restless and more coherent. By the time the abulance arrived it was clear he'd not broken anything and looked reasonably well considering...

Anyway, it was bloody scary! My partner is a trained nurse and even she was quite affected by it afterwards. There was another older woman who pulled up as soon as it happened and sat talking to him all the way through. She was really great, very calm and soothing. She was very emotional afterwards as she'd just lost her mother not long ago.

A very sad tale and certainly a refresher in bike safety!! In a split second this guy almost lost his life, right in front of us, and there was nothing he could do about it. My trip in to work this morning was a very placid one I can tell you.

    Mark.

Good for you for stopping and doing the right thing! Top effort!!!

I guess one of them went through a red light then? Bad news all round I reckon!

Regardless, you made a difference so good onya.

Good on you Mark. It's a horrible job, but you did all the right things.

Slows you down for a while.

Cheers Paul, I don't think we did any more than anyone else would have. Anyway, something to think about regarding the lights down there.

I have a feeling they've changed the signals. After a few minutes of those lights changing from Red, including arrows, the arrows then turn off completely. This gives anyone turning right the right to do so if oncoming traffic is clear. For instance, I turn right at that crossing opposite the pub every day on the way home. I dont' have to wait until there's a green arrow as there are no arrows lit at all.

So as a warning just be extra careful when coming down there either way.
