Which road to travel

I'm riding down from Auckland to New Plymouth tomorrow, enroute to Christchurch over the weekend. Know the road well from Taranki heading south but whats the better option from aucks, SH1 and then 3 down through Hamilton and Te Awamutu or 22 and 31 down to Otorohanga?

Any other points of interest or roads to avoid? Heading down to wellington on sunday then over the ferry monday morning for the ride down the coast home

Personally I'd do Ridge Rd -> SH22 ->SH39 thru to Otorohonga and then SH3.

Fuck SH1.
