    Angry Bastard Harley thieves

    How common is Harley thieft?

My boss brought a limited edition Harley from AMP's last year. Really flash, loud, shiney red/silver Harley. Somewhere around the $60,000 mark I'd imagine. He then got about $5000-$10,000 in Mod's added onto it...

Last night while his Harley was parked in the basement garage of a flash apartment complex (most apartments in that building cost between $500,000 to $3 million. You need swipe cards and all sorts of security crap to get into the apartments and the basement area... Plus my boss chains up his Harley with two titanium locks, and it is alarmed...

Some asshole managed to get into the basement, and after trying to hack through the titanium locks realised he wasn't getting anywhere and hacked through the fucking frame of the bike.

Needless to say they couldn't steal the bike due to the amount of time and effort required to hack through the frame (after the failed attempt of hacking through the chains). And they just left the bike with a hacked up frame...

My boss is fuming and in the shittest mood ever... So no doubt AMP's will be seeing that bike again to get it sorted...

My bike is only worth $5000 (when in road legal condition that is), and I cried when I was told it was a write off... and I'd do pretty much anything to own a Harley like my bosses, so I can imagine how pissed he must feel... god knows how many smoke breaks I've had just sitting and staring at his HD.

Poor guy... And whats worse... they don't have camera's in the basement, so unless the asshole was stupid enough to leave finger prints it is unlikely they will catch the prick

I guess he know's now....it needs some serious anti theft protection to keep a Harley - the main reason I'd never own one.

I wonder how that fucker would feel if someone sawed through his arm to get at a ring he was wearing?
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.

Well not really. Right now I'm more into my sports bikes... and the cruiser (Harley or other) is a goal for when I'm financialy comfortable and can afford two bikes and possibly a car... so I've never really researched into Harleys or cruisers because i don't like to windowshop unless I can buy it in the near future... which I can't so i just stared at my bosses bike when he rides it to work and perve at it...

Makes you want to have data dots on your bike so that they at least can't make money on the parts. My car subaru and bike both have them I don't know the figures on bikes but crime on Subarus have dropped over 90% no theft excess on my bike through star insurance with them on as well.

These days it costs naff all to set up a DVR and a camera to record a location of interest. You can get motion detection software as well that can notice when something moves in the video field.

I have only played with this for a prospective client and we made a PC based set up where the PC would txt a mobile when something happened and you can send a still video capture (pxt) as well.

You would need 230v and an internet connection, PC, camera but compared to a 60K plus bike. Peanuts.

I'd like a VROD to ride to work, or the beach in the summer. Price is too high though (and by price, I mean the 10 years off my life worrying about if it's been nicked all the time).

    poor bugger...
yup they will try anything to get hold of some bikes...utter wankers!
There are some advantages to having a bike that DOESN'T look like a harley...still chain mine up tho.

Very - they are broken down for parts and sent off shore.
If owned one I would not take it anywhere I could not see it at all times.
    That bad.

I didn't know it was that bad...

Some Harleys are so nice... (I'm not talking like black power gang type harleys... they look like shit).

Apparantly the HD my boss has, there are only three in NZ, 2 in the north island and one in the south... so the demand for parts here in NZ for them... I wouldn't have thought would be that high... Exspecially when your looking at paying that much for a bike you can no doubt afford the parts...
