Post any good roads you know and tried

    Alternative 1:
    Length: approx. 125km
    Localities: Between Auckland - Hamilton
    Description:
(can be done both directions, or to-and-back )
Off south SH1, past Pukekohe Track, go to junction
that says "Fort Waikato". Take the other way
(not to fort waikato), and continue on taking
RIGHT at every major junction you find, past Waingaro
Springs, until you get to Ngaruawahia.
Some say this as SH22, but I don't go by numbers.
You'll spend more time leaning than upright.
No cops, but there could be constructions (gravel patches)
    in spring.

    Alternative 2:
    Length: approx. 400km
Localities: Hamilton - Kawhia - Te anga - Hamilton (loop)
    Description:
Start from Hamilton, work south towards Ohaupo.
Turn off to right there towards Pirongia. Good
short backroad. Then usual way from Pirongia to
Kawhia, turning off to Te Anga (just before Kawhia
township. VTR WARNING: refuel first at Kawhia).
Just follow it until you get to Waitomo, then turn back to
Hamilton via highway (sorry, no other way).
Good tight bits, with some parts so twisty that it gives
more advantage to 250 more than the litre-bikes.
Summer can get the aspalt melting a bit here and there.

    Alternative 3:
    Length: approx. 200km
    Localities: Clevedon-Kawakawa-Kaiaua-Hunua
    Description:
email me for details if you REALLY need one.

    Alternative 4:
    Length: approx. 200km
    Localities: Auckland-Welsford-Auckland
    Description:
If you tend to ride faster than 110kph, avoid this
road at all cost. Too many Inland Revenue Mobile
    Division officers here.
Otherwise, just follow SH16 north to Welsford and
    back the same way.

There are also some exciting routes around Hamilton-Teawamutu-Otorohanga-Hamilton(or Rotorua). I've done this with guys at Boyd Honda, but couldn't remember the details. Anybody know?

I went to Taranaki this easter,- off the Mway at Drury and back roads to Kawhia, then down to Te Anga,I was really getting into the road when I discovered I took a wrong turn! had to back track 35 km to Te Anga - I went down to Marokopa to Awakino, dirt roads, not the stuff you guys like.
Coming back was highway 43 - Stratford to Ohura, then off at Otorohanga and up the back way again.Went over the bridge and had a cider at Rangiriri, but came over the bridge again, getting on the Mway at Drury.
I wanted to do highway 40 - Ahititi to Ohura,or Ohura to Piopio, but 9hrs down and 8hrs back,I was running out of time.

Aaargh - Don't Post good roads. It's a well known "fact" that the HP trawl these boards to see where we ride!

What, me paranoid? But they really are out to get me...

BTW Marmoot I agree with you about SH22 (never see a cop) but I've done SH16 many times and apart from the odd one near Kaukapakapa not seen many there either.

Maybe different timing than mine, MikeL.
2 out of 3 times I went there I saw multiple cops. Some of them even were out to specially get us (I suspect, as we were 13 bikes going north on SH1 and everybody would know we'd going nowhere other than south to Hellensville via backroads). Some of them were even hiding behind ridge so you won't see them while coming up to the trap.

Anyway, I'm too paranoid to ride north anymore. Used to be fun 1.5 years ago. Not too enjoyable anyway compared to SH22 or Coromandel loop.

It's very strange, I always used to see lots of cops on SH16. But I haven't seen any for ages.
I know the locals were getting real grumpy a while back about the excessive level of enforcement up there. Maybe the cops have backed off?
