I will be upgrading when the time is right.

I think there is more to the story than the fella is telling us, he did say he was being an idiot so it leaves a lot to be said.

You can do a lot of damage to ANY bike when doing stupid things with it.

    Welcome to the site.

Looks like you've got tank damage along with dents in the upper frame.
    What really happened?

Yeah thanks for the welcomes guys, I'll should elaborate a little on how the milk went sour..

It was raining and I was leaving the parking lot (slippery top floor surface) and instead of cruising out of there with a gentle hand on the throttle I opened up (because it looked like fun at the time).

Only got to around 30kmph before the rear wheel lost traction and I slid out.. when the bike fell on its side I was down to around 10kmph and even then I managed to soften its fall by sticking my leg out before rolling out the way.

The damage: handlebar broke, front mirror came off, small dent in the tank and some scratches on the fairings.

I do have insurance so I cant cry too much ($1500 excess tho) but I'm just pissed at how much damage a small drop can cause to this bike. Handlebars just arent supposed to break off like that its ridiculous

What happens to your arm if you fall off a roof and put it out straight to reduce the effect of your fall? - It's going to break under that pressure!

Consider the same with your clip on handle bar, they are designed in such a way to snap or fold (depending on variables).

I'm curious to know how the frame was damaged.

Were you seriously quoted over $8,000 for a replacement frame?

The handlebar wasn't alloy like practically any Jap/Euro bike, its some sort of faux cement material. I'm concerned about how you guys say they're clipon and easily fixable when the mechanic at the largest bike dealership in Auck says its not possible to fix without swapping out the entire chassis.

The $8k quote included $3.6k for a new chassis and the rest was comprised of misc parts and 16+ hours of labour

I would have gone with a zxr but finding one that hasn't suffered child abuse is pretty damn hard these days

So you go out and buy a new bike, do a wheelie, drop it, write it off... That's fucking classic!!

Seriously though, how can a broken handlebar, a few dints, and a bruised ego possibly write off a bike, come on man, you've got to be kidding!!

I have a 2006 model GT 250R, it has adjustable clip-on handle bars, you remove them using an allen key type tool.

Which is why I find it hard to understand how a handle bar breaking, along with the chassis (frame) becomming damaged is the result of a slow speed drop.

Which dealer did you take it to?

Sounds like tough luck dude, good to hear you have insurance.

I dropped my Kawasaki at maybe 30-40k, lowside after excessive throttle usage. It's Japanese, prob worth $15k+ new and made of the same sort of "high quality" materials as every other Jap sportsbike out there. I broke my factory standard clip on. And I'm glad I broke my clip on. Faced with a clip on breaking or the force being transferred onto the much more expensive forks or frame, I'll take $200 for a new clip on anyday.

I've also seen a Suzuki go down at 160k, then spin round and round and round and round... as it slowly slid to a stop quite a distance down the motorway. The rider got up, put his shoe back on, jumped on the bike and took off. Even managed to pull a wheelie in the process.

It's not about the speed, it's about how you do it.

From the picture it looks like there's a dent in the frame in line with the tank dent. Maybe it's the picture. If that is a dent, then I can understand why it's rooted.

That's my read, too. I can see (I'm fairly sure I can) a dent in the frame box section member just by the tank dent.

I imagine those frames are hollow? Box section. It's come down hard on something angular, and pushed the box wall in a bit.

Whether that actually matters from a functional point if view is maybe debateable. The frame could still be straight and true even with the dent. But, regardless, no bike shop could afford to ignore it when doing an insurance assessment. Frame damaged, so, new frame.

The clip on is almost irrelevant. Like the indicator. I suspect the "concrete" will be some sort of vibration damping material. Make the bar heavier, less vibes. The clipon has snapped, as they do.But that's not what is costing the money.

Freak thing I reckon, just came down on exactly the wrong angle across something sharp (curb ,maybe?). If it weren't insured, maybe you could ignore it, but the insurance company can't.
