Onewa road splitters.

After seeing it multiple times now, I was curious as to whats going through the head of the guys who split down the middle of two lanes merging into one?
I'm certainly not against splitting safely, I do it myself, but in the middle of merging lanes???
What is it? A mindset of "I own the road, you're just guests", or is it "I ride a bike, I can do what I want".

Putting yourself into a position where you can get flattened by the other vehicles, regardless of fault, appears a little darwinian to me.

I havn't been riding for a few months, but I used to ride up Onewa Road every morning.

I tried sitting in traffic... took too long... I tried splitting down between the cages where they start to merge down the bottom as you get closer to the motorway... found that too dangerous as the cages don't give a shit if you are next to them or not...

So finally I ended up going down the centre line. Found that much faster... and much safer than splitting down the middle of the merging lanes... Being on the centre line gives you some space from the cages heading in the same direction as yourself and the cages that are oncoming (in my experience) always see me, and give me a little room on thier side... as you come up to the lights its easy to pull back into the flow of traffic...

Multiple times I've seen cops parked at the lights waiting to pull onto the motorway, they've seen me heaps of times going up the centre line and done nothing...

My attitude, or moreso why I do it... because I can, and I feel safe doing so.

There is a very long 2lane onramp from grafton that merges into one well before it joins the motorway and cars seem to merge for about 500m but never really fully becoming one lane... now it may be illegal but I always ride down the left and if I have to over the sholder rather then get squished between two cars! Cant see whyd youd want to be in that position!

I would have to agree with this statement i too feel much safer moving through traffic rather than sitting in the Q waiting to be hit from behind.

Certianly some of the threads that are posted on KB tend to suggest to it also. I actualy suspect that it would not matter what sort of vehicle they where in charge of, the attitude would probably be the same.

I often split merging lanes heading back from work, because it's easier than changing lanes twice to get to the bus lane after the onramp. When the traffic is crawling, it's way easier to get in to a lane that the rest of the traffic is getting out of.

It's not that dangerous, if done at a reasonable speed. Normal common sense rules of splitting apply. Just be careful if you're splitting past a gap in the right lane that a car may swing in to...and even if he does start to do that, you've got an escape route.

I think you hit the nail on the head...........I doubt anything is going through their minds........

I used to ride that road every morning and watched heaps of riders do that, it always made me a bit nervous watching them. I tried it a couple of mornings and decided the centreline is a much better and safer option. Then I decided to take another route thru college road and Sylvan Ave, its no shorter but lots less traffic and you can cut straight to the front for the lights, actually works out a bit quicker.
