I feel like the biggest looser and I should probably be shot for what I have done.

When changing the oil, I tightned the sump plug too hard and now its broken!!!

I think I need a new sump now and its most definetly too late to get it done by tomorrow. :confused2

Any sujestions anyone? I am gonna cry some more...

has plug broken off, or has thread stripped. if broken can be drilled and replaced -should be easy to get a plug to fit from a wrecker, if stripped eith replace sump or get the thread hole heli-coiled - both fairly simple repairs.

The threads have stripped. Can you please explain what heli-coiled means? New sump for a newish bike will really drain my savings.

It means they re-tap the thread into the sump. Quite common if you overtighten spark-plugs (I did on an old t350).

Do you know any where were I can get it done? Do I need to take the sump off for them to do it? Or can I take my whole bike to them in the van?

I did that too - sucks eh?! Got mine redone (helicoil) at the shop and cost under $100 bucks (can't remember how much) so it's not too bad. They just drill in a new thread somehow. At least you don't need to order in new parts or anything. Moral of the story (for me anyway) was always use the small arm on the socket set!!!

Far be it from me to cut in on JC but you'd have to take your sump in. I doubt any engineering places will want to screw with your bike. Some bike shops might be able to do it, the gear you need isn't expensive so I'd imagine some of them might have it.

FWIW (for anyone else that has this problem), you don't have to take the sump off (although that's the best/safest way to do it) - you can just cut the threads for the helicoil using lots of heavy grease to catch the metal bits, then flush the sump with oil when you've finished, to wash out any bits that might have got in. And the helicoiling itself is a 'piece of piss'. You can get kits from places like Motomail, or engineering supply places. Or there are garages/engineering places that'll do it for you.

As an aside, I thought I'd have to do this with my FahrtSturm. The previous owner had overtightened the sump plug AND rounded off the head of the plug, which is only a 12mm-sized head. I couldn't get anything to grip on the head, as there's a fin on the sump that gets in the way. After mucking about with it for ages, I decided that the worst that could happen was I'd wreck the thread in the sump, so I went for it and drilled it with three bits of increasing diameter (to make a tapered hole) and stuck the largest 'Ezi-Out' I could in the hole. I was wailing on it with a 12" wrench, and all of a sudden it went "CRACK!!"

I thought "The Ezi-Out has broken as usual..", but it was just the plug letting go, and all was sweet after that: drained the oil, fitted the new plug AND washer, refilled it, and away I go.

The moral: change the crush washer occasionally, and DON'T overtighten the plug!
