    R1 question

    Is this true???

In the June edition of NZ Autocar, there is a comparison test between the R1 and CBR1000.
In the text, its claimed that the R1 can hit 159kph in first gear

...or is just car journo's getting carried away...

Yeah all the new litre bikes are geared to do around 100mph in first gear. Stupid for anything apart from the track. Thats why most guys change the gearing straight after they buy them.

If we ever get a fine day I will put it to the test. I'll post something here later on.
I'm not surprised to hear that about the new 1000s though. I haven't taken any particular notice of when 1st tops out but its way up there. It seems you could ride all day and never get into 4th gear! I know the first time after running it in when I tried full throttle I near shit myself to see 200+something kph flick past seconds after changing into 2nd or maybe it was into 3rd?Anyway by 3rd gear I had to back off on an empty straight that I had expected would have got me through all the gears. I've joked about taking the top 3 gears back to the shop for a refund because they're redundant and have never worked - isn't that covered by the warranty.
The gearing on the CBR1000 certainly seems high compared to my last bike, a CBR929 so trying different gearing is on the agenda. Changing the front sproket is not the simple task it usually is, so it looks like I might go for a rear swap when the first tyre replacement comes up.
The motor's got so much grunt though that the gearing doesn't come into it performance wise. Changing cogs may lead to unwanted rear wheel slides. But experimenting sounds like fun. Keep ya posted.

I can vouch for 124kph on the '03 Gixxer thou in first, and that was before it hit the limiter. It was howling so bad I just had to change up. I'll give it berries soon, maybe Monday if the forecast is right, and let you know what it peaks at.

    It gives a great 0 to 160 km/h time.

I guess you are referring to the R1 Lou reaching 160. I find that hard to believe but if a mag says so it must be true right.
The sun shone for a while today and it was glorious getting out in the dry.
    Testing the top speed thru the gears produces a dull top speed result on public roads;
    1st gear = 100 kph
    2nd gear = 100kph
    3rd gear = 100kph
4th gear = 100kph so on and so on (see how boring speed limits can be).
Luckily I came across a clear stretch of road and had an abacus with me so I could calculate "theoretical" top speeds that would have taken me above the legal limit. My calculations showed that just 500 revs shy of the red line (even theoretically I try not to redline a good motor) 1st would be 136kph and 2nd 185kph. For the other gears I need a longer road and fresh batteries for the abacus.

ps anyone out there able to "calculate" numbers from their R1, zx10 or whatever for comparison

I was little bored in the weekend and was thinking about this thread. So i had a professional stuntman, riding under controlled circumstances, with safety supervision (read: me fanging it on ruakura straight) perfom the following calculations, all measurement on limiter.

    1998 TL 1000s
    1st gear = 110km/h
    2nd gear = 155km/h
3rd gear = f@$k knows, too wet and windy for me

You'd be better off changing the rear sprocket anyway (except financially).
Bikes are generally slightly overgeared to aid them in passing noise and emission tests. On most Hondas, and many other bikes, they are generally set up with a 16-tooth front sprocket, and going down a tooth makes for a fairly tight bend for the chain, wearing it more rapidly (and making a LOT more noise).
Even though the Storm isn't anywhere near as fast or grunty as the Blade (only because it doesn't rev as high and doesn't have that fancy electronic steering damper ), it's still overgeared, so it's common to lower the gearing.
I went the Cheap Bastid (TM) route, and fitted a 15-T front sprocket, but when I change the chain I'll go back to a 16 and put a 43 on the rear.
Now it actually wheelies less, as the wheelbase is effectively longer and the bike is very slightly higher at the back because of this, but at least I can now use 3 or 4 gears when commuting, instead of just 1 or two.
Heck - I even got to use ALL the cogs the other day when I went for a strop up to ALbany and back during lunchtime (just because I could).
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

    Thumbs up sampled a ZX10

Got to try out a Kwaka ZX10 today. Of course I am going to be biased so take this as my opinion only OK, no getting upset you Kwaka fans. Also it was a short spin down and back up the Hill on a borrowed bike.

1.- best gear box ever sampled. Changes are by mind power only barely touching the levers it felt like there were no gears at all, just some sort of silky smooth auto.
2- Top end POWER ! ! !If you could find an empty straight long enough to explore the upper revs it would be the absolute fastest machine around. Top end power is incredible, more than anything I've felt. Hard work keeping the front wheel down which really worked against making fast progress up the hill. Below 6k its a big disapointment on a windy road. Even at 5k revs opening it up would see the engine bogged down taking seconds to start to pick up speed. The CBR has more go everywhere from idle to 6k all over the ZX10, which is why I would always be quicker on the CBR. A racer pro might be able to harness the hi revs but even in 1st gear I felt the power wanting until it builds - shouldn't have to wait.
If the gearbox is world leader then sorry but the brakes were world leaders sometime in the 80s. Did they get some leftovers from Harley D?
Loved the speedo. Best layout but really hard to see where the revs are at. Hey, by the way I did see 150kph in 1st but couldn't see the revs although I'm sure it would do 160kph easily.
Super light to turn in but not as stable & secure as the CBR in a bend and that front just wont stay put. Anyway I still loved it and the induction howl
    is a turn on.

My thoughts exactly. The CBR seems almost boring as it is SOOOO easy to ride. And it doesn't make it hard to ride fast and it is quiet - all making it seem like it is slower. The ZX10 rattles at idle, fair screams at speed - all of which make you think you are going quick - which you usually are.

I put the R1 and the ZX10 in the same boat - fucken rapid bikes, that always seem like they are on the edge. I then put the GSXR and CBR in the same boat - fucken rapid bikes, that are soo easy to ride - they con your mind in to thinking they are slow!

Re the revs - that is just getting used to a diff bikes mapping as more than likely you should have been one gear down the cog.
