I did a high side at 80 kmh after a tyre blew out, and received multiple bruises. (on the west coast)
But at 30 kmh outside a school I was taken out by a taxi and ended up in hospital.

Now what speed did you say is dangerous?

The point is NOT that a particular speed is dangerous, or that at any other particular speed you will be safe. Its how you ride and what you hit, or what hits you, that matters. No helmets on it own at low speed is probably not such a big deal, and that is why the cop just gave you a bit of advice and no ticket. But having a pillion increases the risk, and if that pillion is side saddle then you are really asking for trouble.

Anf 100kmh into wall? I'd be dead helmet or no helmet, so would you. But 10kmh or 1 kmh , and lose balance on the side away from the one your pillion is facing and she will have serious head injuries without a helmet.

Its much easier to lose balance and control at low speed than it is at high speed.
    Time to ride

I got a good welcome too in the beginning but managed to survive intact. (I think)

Be kind to Beemer, she's actually quite nice See all the green squares on the rightside of her name. She knows what she's on about.

Nice idea man, I know the romance of the ball etc - but you planned something illegal and got sprung. Next time just plan something on the right side of the law. The romance is in the thought anyway. Shame you couldn't pull it off, but I'm willing to bet the g/f appreciated it anyway.

Like someone mentioned - go easy on Beemer - she's got it right.

Cripes, can someone tell my husband I know what I'm talking about? He might disagree...!

Hey BuRnS, you can't blame some of us for giving you a hard time, you told us what you'd done and we told you what we thought about it. If you didn't want that kind of reaction, you shouldn't have posted something that would obviously divide us into two camps - those who thought "what a moron!" and those who thought "on ya mate!"

And I think you were bloody lucky to get off with just a warning - get the same cop on a different night and it could have been a ticket and an eye kept on you for ages afterwards. Bit of a 'damned if he does, damned if he doesn't' situation.

If you want to ride without a helmet, you have to be a gang member, be going to a tangi and have lots of mates with you.
