I'm always a fan of newer. You shouldn't take a backward step in age just for a bit more horsepower.

The old R1 is a good bike but still carbed. Better to get a newer thou with injection. Lots of old R1's have been raced too.

Get the new 2006 r6 possibly the best looking motorcycle out there.

The 99 R1 has more low end and mid range power than the new one (but less up top). For most times that makes it easy to ride. You can be lazy and still have tons of instant performance on tap. The handling was a little nervous but if you spend a bit on the suspension and maybe a steering damper you may be able to sort it out for you. Reliablity is excellent and weight is about the same as the new one. There is nothing wrong with the carbed motor nor is it any less powerful than the early (02-03) injected motors. The styling is better on these early models IMHO (less angular). PB seem to like this old bus as well - look in any recent issue. All this is my opinion of course, others may disagree.

I’d stick with the 6, but I have mistrust for the older R1’s…

where do you ride? How do you ride? Like wheelies? Like your licence?

If you like twisties the 600 is your friend, like straights and sweepers, R1 wants your babies.

You like to throw the bike around 600 is your friend, SQUID - R1 wants your babies

Lots of skill to do wheelies then r6 is all good, hamfisted but can control the throttle - r1 wants your babies.

Licence? - r1 wants your babies.

To be honest. If you sold your R6 or even trade it in you would only be about $4000 short on the new R6.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.
