    2000 R6 and 6R on TradeMe

What's your opinion on these two bikes guys and girls :

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...px?id=65366251

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...px?id=65143176

If you've owned them, have one now, or even ridden them atleast.

Any common problems, pros and cons about each. Weight, torque, power, handling, acceleration, carbs, EFI, maintenance. I know it's broad issue to cover in just a thread and to say one is better over the other.

Too many varying factors but just wanting general overview and opinion about each and MOST OF ALL HOW MUCH BUCKS WOULD YOU DISH OUT FOR EACH ONE ??

    Cheers Ears !

For starters, that's not actually a 2000 ZX6 - it's either a '99 or '98 model. Perhaps what happened is the bike was first registered in 2000.

I'm riding the '99 model (first registered in 2002 - the seller who sold mine made the same mistake; advertising as a 2002 model)

Mine has been low maintenance, and runs real well. No problems aside from needing the spark plug drains cleaned at one point.

At the current fuel price ($1.70 per litre?) I get about 190k city driving to $30, and about 220k long distance crusing.

Easy riding in the rain, the throttle response is predictable, and the power band is smooth to come in and doesn't have a sudden burst (unless you really wind the throttle, of course) which I hear the R6 does.

Also, I moved up straight from an FXR-150 to the '99 ZX6R. It was an easy transition.

You moved from an 18hp fxr to a 107hp ZX6?
How old are you? I'm gonna tell mum. THEN she'll let me buy a ZX-14.
I'd go for the ZX6R, like the looks more than the yam, don't like those huge bugeye lights (though they're probably pretty effective). But the paintjob on the R6 looks better than the ZX6, more modern styling. But if it was between 2006 R6 and 2006 ZX636, I'd go for the kawasaki.
ZX6 is the 600cc, designed more for track use one, right?

Not the old one. only when they introduced the 636 did the 6r become a more race model with a few extra goodies like slipper clutch etc etc etc.

The numbers speak for themselves the r6 is lighter with more power and had a 180 rear (so you can buy ex racies) believe me I had a 160 on the cbr and they were bloody expensive. The r6 will probably require a steering damper though. talk to firefight/Motoracer/gareth_d if you want to know about R6's
Lump lingered last in line for brains,
And the ones she got were sort of rotten and insane...

The ZX6R is an easy bike to ride. Real good on the road, ie not too harsh.
    Yeah the headlights are good.
Price ain't bad... Need to check the condition

Moxy - I was getting up to 280kms out of a tank (before reserve).

I love my kwaka's, but the zx6r model before the 636 looks too much like a sports tourer for my liking, and also seem sto be a little bit lardy compared to the r6.
    I would buy the R6.

I had the 2002 ZX6R (US model, still 600cc, not the first 636 like the UK model). Looks a bit better than the pre-2000 one above, but should be a very similar ride. It fucken owned the roads! Far better road bike than the R6, any Gix I've ridden, and the '03 636 I had.

On the track it ran out of clearance too early, but could still be set up to put down some respectable times, and it's a good laugh decking the pegs...for a while anyway.

I used to get 280kms to reserve cruising, or 130ish thrashing it on Puke, which is still pretty good.

The 6R is a carbed job, but has pretty good fuelling if set up right. Not quite as good as the new 32-bit jobbies around though.

R6 would likely be a better track tool, but if you're gonna ride on the road, go the 6R.

I wouldn't pay more than $7k for either.

i've had my R6 for a tad under a year now, and loving every moment of it. Only thing about them is that you need to get the suspension setup and using the correct oils for it to handle really nice, otherwise it tends to 'understeer' if you change the power mid-corner.

With the help of a steering damper it'll become a weapon, and was the preferred tool for racing back in the day until the k1 GSXR600 came out with fuel injection.

Havent had any problems with the carbs, but at 42,000km it needs valve clearances done which is around the $500 mark depending on the condition. They come with the clutch out of the R7 race bike so unless your a gump, or try too many wheelies that should hold out really good too.

Mileage is 230km normal riding, 270km nanna, and i usually use a tank of gas withing 140km at track days.

I paid $8000 for a 1999 registered at 2001 with 23,000km, new tyres, new chain + sprockets, Two Brothers Racing high mount pipe, dynojet kit, K+N filter, Ohlins fork valves and a steering damper. That was a bit of a good deal, Mt Eden m/c have/had one with 25,000km on the clock stock standard for $9,995 last time i looked.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

I've had both of those bikes.
they are very different. if i had to choose i'd go with the zx6r because it's more practical and a better allrounder(does everything extremely well).
    a couple observations...
the zx6r is higher maintenance(closer service intervals).
They have the similar power, the r6 feels lighter.
the zx6r uses less gas(i could get 330k from a tank if i babied it).
the r6 is a really focused weapon very tight & razor sharp, maybe a little 'skittish' whereas the 6r has a solid trustworthy feel. both are pretty quick. you can go faster through the tighter twisties on the r6 due to the sharp handling but not that cool akl-wgn unless you'rea midget. if you fancy yourself as a racer type get the r6. if you wanna do some solid roadriding get the 6r. good luck they're both good bikes..
    i'd say the 6r $7k,r6 $7.5k.
    ..it's another red light nightmare..

oh my god you 280k to a tank, 320k to a tank!?

I'm only getting about 190k before reserve. Any idea where my problem could lie?

Cruising, I'll be around 6.5k RPM , and I am not revving hard enough to pull a wheelie when coming away from the lights.

I'm not keen on taking it in to be checked, as I had a bad experience with a certain bike shop in Wellington which didn't fix the problem correctly, and wanted to charge me for taking it back in for doing the job they should have done in the first place, so around $300 wasted at the shop for a fixup I ended up doing myself.

haha I'm 23, and my mum had nothing to do with it.

Actually, when my dad bought his first bike, his mum told him "If you buy that bike you're not living here anymore" so he bought the bike, and moved out of home Hope you can afford it

It was an easy transition. The ZX6 is actually easier to ride than the FXR - especially in the rain, I had some scary moments slipping out on the FXR.

    Cheers Guys !

Just a few things from your posts.

I called the owner of the 6R but he still insists it's a 2000 model lol. Checked online on Kawasaki's website, sure the one piece headlight is a 98 or 99 model. Also checked on ebay same thing.

As for what I'd use the bike mainly for, well just commuting and usual weekend rides not racing yet, I've only been on bikes just over 8 months now

I am also guessing both these bikes are carbs and not EFI right? Or is the R6 EFI?

Interesting thoughts on the price as well R6 dude is asking 7.5k and 6R fella 8k? Any thoughts? I am also concerned about the R6 location and costs to get it up here.

    Thanx.

Both are too high, though the R6 is closer to realistic.

From what you say you want out of the bike the 6R would be better. R6 is sharper handling, lighter feel. 750Y sumed it up well and he's had both. 6R is carbed and very good they are too.
