    As mentioned, they definitely help. They absorb/buffer the violent side to side "slapping" of the handlebars, usually reducing the distance each time until the bars are straight. This whole process could be for mild left/right shaking of the bars or for the big handle to tank and back slappers - either way it is usually dampened instantly (I'd guess about 1 or 2 secs MAX)

    There are far more technical explanations, as well as other benefits I'm sure. That's how I understand them to work.

    As Death says, yeah they do make a significant difference. I wouldn't be so keen to land one as described above without one, but then I've only ever got one arm on the bar and am not a very big guy.
