Never heard of 'sending one in the mail' in that sort of circumstance. Do nothing until/unless it arrives, then send your letter...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Yep I agree see what happens. And if you do need to send it in, stress that it was an emergency that you separate yourself from the traffic.

From the ltsa website - Emergency Lanes:

You must use common sense to judge what a genuine emergency is, remembering that you can be prosecuted for stopping or parking on a motorway, if the Police spot you using an emergency stopping lane and believe your circumstances do not warrant doing so. For example, you could be fined for pulling over into an emergency stopping lane to use your cellphone.

The cop didn't even ask your circumstances. A bit rude. Maybe he was grumpy that the traffic was so slow that he couldn't easily get his quota.

News this morning ! 26% of people polled are less than impressed with the performance of the police. I wonder why ?

Lower the standards, pay peanuts and thats the sort of recruit you'll get. Discretion sure ain't part of it nowdays. Hang on , thats a bit tough ! there are less policemen of the type we used to have . G.

If he didn't write out a ticket there and then, 99.9% chance you won't be receiving one. He was just being pig ignorant and an arsehole.
If you ever site the ticket. Write in - you would get let off - and if you didn't - write to the Ombudsman - causes them shitloads of paperwork and they HAVE to reply within certain timeframes.

I'd put that in my letter to challenge the ticket, politely of course.

To be honest I think what you did was entierly ok, but a better course of action might have been to open the visor and get a wet face (unless you wear glasses?)

As others have said, wait for the ticket, he could have just been playing with you... you never know.

My biggest issue with the cops is that they just apply the law. They don't use common sense, and the attitudes I have got is that you're in the wrong, we're gonna do you, because you broke the law. They seem to also think we genuinely want to commit suicide.

Yes, apparently there are nice cops, and I have met a few. The only times I have been pulled for something, I've had people bent on getting me, and ignored why I had done something etc.

Challenge the ticket because it was an emergency and you were pulling over to stop. No question the cop was a bit rough but shit happens, its just part of being a road user. QKKID your sig says it all...

Every single copper I've ever met - and that's more than a few - has been a really decent bloke off-duty

On-duty it can be a different story though

It's an EMERGENCY shoulder which takes priority over being a bus lane.
Not being able to see is an emergency. Write and tell them that you pulled into the lane to clear your visor. The heavy rain made it impossible to open the visor at traffic speed. You didn't have anything to wipe the visor with, so you chose to travel slowly until the airflow cleared it.
Keep it brief and to the point. But do mention that the cop did not ask for an explanation.

Yeah, I've never had any trouble with the bobbies either, they've all been quite nice but rushed fellows. I never have done much wrong tho, and I guess it helps I'm a white middleclass male with a tidy haircut.
