Securing data within a shared computer

Thought it would be handy to store some "files" in a secure folder to stop prying fingers getting at them

or just run windows 2000pro or XP pro and you can do what ever you want if you run separate user login's

Put your porn on a CD or DVD.....

All the cheap encryption software does these days is compress "files" into an obsure filetype and then un compress it to its original state. There are always ways around it

and disable booting from external devices in the bios. and don't give any one else an administrator account (which screws up a lot of older apps).

make sure you password the administrator mode too (you need to goto safe mode or press ctrl+alt+del twice or something).

You can put it two folders deep in a zip file which can then be password protected I saw today

I can access any windows computer if it has a functional floppy or cd drive and I can get access to the machine. Install Unix .

I have Ubuntu's latest release.

Its a pain in the arse with media files though. Nicer than the old one I had as I can access my FAT32 drives whilst in linux.

Dude, this doesn't protect files or folders. There are ways around ACLs and I doubt 'normal' everyday people would know how to use them properly anyhow.

Some encryption package would be much simpler and more effective in 'protecting' your files\folders.

Why bother? Seriously, it's a shared computer. If they were really keen they'd just install a keylogger. And when you access the files chances are it's going to leave temporary files of the contents all over the place anyway.

First question you really need to ask yourself is who will be looking (and will they be looking specifically? - in which case they suspect, which means you've screwed up already) and what level of skill do they have? (from making a folder in an usual place, hiding folders, to full on protection)

Or you could go with a removable caddy/hdd, and never worry... unless they got their mitts on it.
