I think you have missed the point, this women has been given a reprieve on a far more serious set of offences when you or I would likely to be booked for much less serious infrigements-There lies the credibility problem.

I thank my luckies every time I have been pulled.
The only tickets I have ever had from a human came by post (parking tickets / speed cameras), or rookies at the drive through window (compulsory reg / wof checks).

I have been pulled for license shredding speeds but lucky for me they have always either
    a) accepted my explanation.
    b) not accepted my explanation but let me off with a warning.

Why? IMHO it is because I rarely speed when other people are likely to be about, and I observe lane ettiquette and other laws, rules etc.

But more importantly I am polite about it, and genuinely upset, but not about getting pulled as "they are just doing their job".

I even got away with "Shit, your kidding me! I'll get the speedo cable looked at when the bike shop opens monday." select a gear, shake officers hand and thank him profusely and ask him to set me a pace to measure agianst my rev counter for 50 then 100. He did.

Couldn't agree with you - discretion is about it not being compulsory and that circumstances, and thought on the part of the cop, should prevail.

As a point I have spent quite a few times in USA (never ridden a bike there though) and have driven a lot over there. Probably how the SA chick felt in strange circumstances things take a bit of getting used to.

I was pulled up by a cop on a nasty wet night at Rosemont near O'Hare airport Chicago because he said I went through a red light. They have at most turns the right turn on red option - they are a stop and then proceed action. If it doesn't apply its signposted "No right turn on red". In this case I come to the intersection and its one of those wide multi-lane jobs with a slip lane to turn right (i.e. with a little triangle of median at the corner etc). The other problem is they have a habit of only having their lights suspended above the main central part of the intersection. Here we put an extra light pole on any of those side lane type bits. Anyway, I stop at the red as you have to do and look around - as I said nasty wet night - I'm blowed if I can see the sign so I think well OK off we go now as nothing is coming. On go the disco lights within seconds. Where the hell he came from I never saw. He talks to me, finds I'm a Kiwi about 300m from my hotel. I explain how I took care, couldn't see the sign etc. He says "yeah I saw you stopped" etc etc. He used his discretion then - some foreign dick caught out by local peculiarities etc and said "take care, y'all have a nice night" kinda thing.

I appreciated being cut some slack in such circumstances and if that had been a compulsory ticket situation I would have been pissed off.

I am sure the same applies here, one size does not fit all. Safety is the key thing that the cops should have in mind and they should make their minds up based on circumstances, not rely on black and white law. That is my view.

I ride and drive with safety in mind, not the speed limit.
    Cheers

    Merv

Too right, Merv. The laws are there purely for safety reasons, so enforcing them should also be done with that as a guiding principle.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I agree, cannot see a rational explanation for this woman NOT getting a speeding ticket, - especially in light of the constant tirade from those that have been issued tickets for an awful lot less.

It blows the credibility of other officers out the water, how can people say in .... I give up trying to explain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( obviously I ain't had enough black label yet!!

Btw, the lady concerned is sorry for her actions!

Ah, so there is more to the story, yet you wanted to get peoples opinions without giving all the facts? She was in labour at the time and about to give birth? Maybe the cop was fully justified in letting her go as he knew the whole story.

    Re being let off

Well myself and a number of others from this site have had some pretty good let offs from Mr So I don't have a problem with this story, and have no reason to doubt it.

    you're an assuming granny pete!

The facts I gave you all were sufficient to tell the full story, anything not mentioned was of a more personal nature and had no bearing on the outcome...

You said "There is more to the story than I stipulated, but I havn't had permission to mention those things" implying that there were more details that had a bearing on the outcome. If not relevant, why mention it at all?

    Like a slight corner, ffs!

I've seen someone let of 52kph over the speed limit through roadworks on the Gordonton Road, so Zed's story doesn't surprise me at all, and I'm not perterbed by it either.

She possibly should have got a ticket for no seatbelt, but if he didn't spot it (which I find surprising), he didn't spot it.

On another note: what the hell was with the 30kph signs on SH1 south of Karapiro Mobil this morning??? The cops were having a field day, and I came across absolutely no reason for the signs to be out, especially for such a distance, at all!!!

They wouldn't have put them out just to slow down the Field Days Traffic ... would they??? :sneaky2:

I've gotten away with wheelying past a cop at well over 100kph twice now, though the last one did flick his lights on breifly, and gave the finger to those following me,so there is still some discetion being shown I guess.
I think you guys are being a bit unfair judging this guy, unless you were there to know all the circumstances.
