they could have slim - i attended about a dozen nose to tails right down near gorton road one year, the traffic was backed up so far. i had to drive on the wrong side of the road all the way into cambridge to try and free up the shakespeare intersection - the problem was caused by northbound people turning left off SH1 onto shakespeare having to give way to southbound people turning right, and because EVERYONE southbound was turning right, it only took 5 minutes to create a 5km tail. it really is a shambles at fieldays time - try 90 minutes to get from matangi to the airport. bring your bike if you're coming down...

Really, truly??? They can do this???

The first 30kph sign was halfway up a passing lane for christs sake! With no warning sign prior and no shutting down of the passing lane with cones as they tend to do on the Kaimai's, which is completely sensible. This was the Karapiro Boat Landing passing lanes I think, and the 100kph sign didn't appear till just before Mobil Karapiro (all this is North bound, btw).

There was no reason for the signs (ie roadworks or road marking signs or whatever), there were no trucks or people or surveyors the entire length of the speed restriction.

If it was for slowing down traffic, why would it end before Mobil Karapiro?

officers discretion is fine, IF they are allowed to use it, gotta feel sorry for the HP who get orders for "$1000 an hour" even if they don't feel like pulling someone over for 111kph on the motorway with no traffic it's a case of, "well, it is against the law, and i don't want to lose my job".

I think you guys are being a bit unfair judging this guy, unless you were there to know all the circumstances.
I don't think that was discretion!! More likely it was the cold hard realisation that he probably had no chance of catching up to you even if he wanted to.

    and then there's this idiot.....

Speeding driver claims he was 'blow-drying' his car

    15.06.2004 8.12 am

A man caught driving at more than 120km/h in a 50km/h zone claimed he was trying to blow-dry his car, Whangarei District Court was told.

Roger Edward Daniel, 37, a dredgemaster of Whangarei, was fined $300 and disqualified him from driving for six months after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

When stopped by police last Sunday he told officers he had just washed his car and was trying to dry it off.

"I have a bad back and just thought I would do that (drive at speed) to dry the car instead of having to chamois it dry," Daniel said in court.

"I was looking at the water on my bonnet as I was picking up speed, but I backed off when I realised how fast I was going."

He said there were no other vehicles or people on the road at the time.

Oh, that's just class, that is!

He deserves the ban if he admits to watching the bonnet instead of the road, especially in a 50kph area!

Remember the guy who got cleaned out on his brand, spanking new TL1000 in Dinsdale, Marty? I believe he might be walking now, but he was doing well over 100kph in a 50kph zone & had a c@r turn in front of him simply because he wasn't there when she checked for traffic.

50kph zones are also called residential areas for a fairly obvious reason.
