most of the Japenese 250's are pretty good buys, each have their good points, you should be able to get a 04 maybe 05 for around $5 G, when you are buying look for the obvious movements in the suspension bearings etc, i would reccomend taking off the seat and looking at the air filter, if its dirty or ripped i would be suspect on it, i would take it out to see if their is any dirt inside as well, if you go the 125 you should be able to get a 05 or 06 for about $5, new KX125's are only $8500 full retail so you can get a good deal on a 1 or 2 year old ones,

if you are trail riding have you looked at a KDX200, lot less maintence than a mxer and good value at $7000 new, definalty put the pipe on one as they really wake them up

YZ's are pretty cool. To be honest, I don't think you can go wroing with any of the major bike names, they all go like a bat out of hell, and turn corners rather beautifully. I think it comes down to what feels right for you dude. Hell, I rode my old 1982 DR250 for the first 6 months of this year, every weekend, and wouldn't trade it for the world for sheer enjoyment factor.

KX125's have the same basic motor layout since 03, the 03 to 05 are pretty close in performance, but the 06 is a bit better,

    sorry don;t no about YZ250's

i would say it depends on ur riding style. it u prefer more torque get a 250 2t if u like riding the bike hard get a 125 2t.

i have a kx 125 that i have to ride full throttle all the time to be competitive (im no everts just your regular weekend rider who rides with friends) on a mx track whereas a 250 2t is more forgiving if u try come out of a corner or go through a rythem section in too higher gear u wont loose all ur speed and power.

saying that 125s are great fun and as nible as anythying. i wouldnt trade it for anything.

yeah i ride a kx250,thought abt a 4 stroke but was told they cost more to maintain, wanted somthing i could work on myself and a 2 stroke fits my needs, much dose depend on where you ride though,i started on a kx125 but got bored with it quite quick,so got new 250 and scared myself everytime i got on it,but am stronger now and able to throw it around alot better.06 kx 250 dude,2 tanger heaven!

Ive got myself a cr125, 02 model, depends what you want to do with the bike ,you said you want to do abit of MX and also trail rides, which is exactly what i do, a bit of both. All the japa 125's are pretty much the same in preformace, the 125 would be better for a first time MXer, lighter, and more manageble then the 250, but then they just run out of balls on the trail rides when their is a bit if a straight.
the 125 keeps up on the track easy with the bigger bikes if you are riding it hard enough and also smooth. just have to keep them up in the rpm's, if you bog down then its all over.
My 2 cents would be go for the 125 first untill you have mastered it then go to the 250. i know of guys that have gone up to the 250 and can't ride them as fast as the 125 and have gone back down in size.
Good luck with what ever you get, and don't let the bike take you for a ride.

I Have ridden heaps of 250 2t bikes I just am deciding whether im gonna kill a 125 because i tend to be hard on bikes (wrecked XR250 in a week!!) do the motors wear out quickly? on 125s any one owned a RMX250??I want a 125 2t because it wont guzzle as much fuel and is lighter but want a 250 2t because the motor will last longer and has way more power man its confusing

if you use crap oil for your premix then the motor won't last very long, i can get about 50-60 kays on a trail ride but less on the MX track, my engine lasted for 6 months before i rebuild it, started lacking toque but, the 125 is cheaper to rebuild as was cost me $280 for a top end rebuild which i did my self and that included a new spark plug and transmission oil. and that was OME parts as well.
