    Holy Shit...!!!

At the Albany end of the Riverhead-Coatesville highway there is a set of 55kph corners that are quite fun to take at speed. I ride this road every day so as usual I had a fair pace on as I came around the first corner and lined up the second. I noticed someone who looked like Strat coming toward me so gave him a nod. Out of the corner of my eye I thought he might have been waving slightly more frantically than usual. I soon discovered why! A cattle truck had just dumped it's load on the next corner and the road was green and wet...

For the next 5km every corner had wet shit on it.

I was lucky that when I noticed the biker coming the other way I scrubbed off some speed before hitting the corner. No moments were had but it could have been different.

I quietly fumed about cattle trucks all the way through the ride. How dare one spoil my ride home!

Reaching the end of the Riverhead - Coatesville highway I spied the truck just in front. I followed it for a minute and managed to grab it's number plate and the company that owned the truck.

On arrival home I rang the company and asked why it was that this guy had felt it necessary to empty his truck when he was only 10km from his base in Silverdale. The guy I spoke to muttered something about where else do they dump it, yes the trucks do have holding tanks, it had been raining and the bottom of the truck must have been wet etc etc etc...

The phone call achieved nothing but at least I tried...

its actually against the law for the cattle trucks to dump their "waste" on the road. I would call the local council and Im sure they would of been interested.

Here in the Northern Territory we have Road Trains, Horse with 3 and sometimes 4 trailers..... A lot of them are cattle transporters and I have not yet seen any cow shit on the roads that they travel on... What a pleasure!

I often come accross "Country Ice" (Cow Shit on the road) up my way. The Stock Trucks up here have a bad habbit of "spilling" there overloaded tanks on the tight corners. Love ta catch one of the buggers but don't like my chances of getting anything done about it. There are still a few cattle crossings on the road around here to. They are especially bad ta come accross around milkings. There is also a lot of mud on these roads to at the moment, mainly due to the mud of the tractor tyres as the farmers go down the roads with the hay and feed from 1 part of the their farm to another.

My point: Ride expecting that there is "shit" on the road at all times, especially in country areas and especially at this time of year (milking has started and the paddocks are f*cken muddy). Sure report the bad truckie were ya can find them, but stay alive and upright by riding in such away as to be able to respond to finding this shit on the road. If ya riding ta ya limit in these conditions ya have nothing left ta save ya bike at the last moment. Continue down this track you ran the risk of joining the "Fencing Club" (see the pics of in "A Post About A Post" ).

PS: this is not a post picking on anyone, it's just a friendly reminder for all of us ta be careful out there, OK.

Yup - Auckland Regional Council is the one... 366 2000. Dumping shit on the road is a pollution issue and they take is pretty damned seriously...

Edit - I should add, I understand the District Councils (Rodney in this case?) don't handle pollution issues, that's a Regional Council issue...
