    DR250S - Oil

I have a 93 DR250S, dry sump model - Japanese import with upside down forks. I have no manual yet and am about to change the oil etc. Is the gearbox oil in this model the same as the engine oil like in ordinary singles? Or is it separated somehow? Never had a Japanese dry sump bike before. Also, anyone know how much oil it takes?

Looks like no one has the answers. Well, just in case, I'll throw in one more Q: How does a wet clutch work in a dry sump engine?

They just take the one oil,but you need to drain the frame and engine seperatly. They usualy retain an oil level in the engine for gearbox lubrication, and often have forced lubrication of gears as well. There is enough oil flying around to make a wet clutch wet.

Had a talk with mates at the suzuki dealership in Ashvagas this morning and according to their files.

2.1lt of oil on a rebuild, so just doing an oil change somewhere around the 1.9 - 2 lt area

To check the level, start the bike up let idle (don't rev it) for a few minutes to warm the oil up, undo the filler cap/dipstick & clean it then rest it on the neck of the oil reservoir don't screw it in & that'll show you the level of the oil.

The XLV750 was the worst bike to check oil on I've ever owned. It had 1.5 litres in the engine, and 1.5 in the frame, with dipsticks for each.So you had to warm it up....then let it sit for half an hour, then idle only (NO throttle) for 3 minutes. Then you switched it off and checked both dipsticks - sometimes one would be higher,or lower than the other, then you'd have to run it some more until they evened out, then check again and decide which one to put the oil in,then go through the balancing exercise again.Frustrating....

    Ignition timing and valve clearances

Anyone know the ignition timing ... and valve clearances for my 1993 DR250S and whether they should be checked hot or cold?

    Cheers in advance ...
