Lots of people seem to have it done, but the speedo won't go over 180km/h. You'll be doing a lot faster, but it will only read 180.
I'm really surprised, they're usually pretty good in otago for doing that.

I recently traded in my GS1200SS after I had put over 22000 km on it. In that time I never found out how to derestrict it. My local dealer didn't know how to do it, and I wasn't game to try it myself without an accurate wiring diagram. However there were only a couple of times that the extra speed would have come in handy. Otherwise the 180 kmh was sufficient. I did two complete tours of New Zealand and 4 times around the South Island on mine.
Jimmy B, You wont ever complain about lack of grunt. In standard form its never going to be a track bike, but as a sports/tourer its right up there with the rest. It will pull away smoothly from quite low revs, which means that when you want to overtake you just open the throttle and let the bike do the rest. Its handling is good. Remember this bike is a retro copy of the 1986 GP bike (hence the twin rear shocks), and its handling is biassed toward open sweeping bends. In really tight corners you do have to wash off your speed early or you may end up taking two bites at the bend.

Thanks Jantar - Really great read and looks like a huge commitment to complete a long distance ride like that, well done. Appreciate your comments. Out of interest, if I may be a bit cheeky, you mentioned that you have recently traded the GS, was this a bike related reason?
I have found it to be a great bike. The finishing is a bit cheap but I have had no problems with it so far.
It has tons of torque and other than the fact that is tops at at 180 (it still feels like there is tons left to go) it is a great ride.
Not as sporty as my old GSX1100R but I needed a cheaper bike as I was buying a house
Nice one Lil Byte, I am a big fan of grunt as opposed to top end (still nice to have both I guess) and I understand the GS has buckets of it. Will be interested to hear how you get on with your plans to un leash the beastie.

Well yes, it was bike related, but not GS1200 related. You may note that in the Southern Cross ride I commented on how well the Suzuki VStroms performed. After the SC I had a try on a VStrom and was really impressed. I decided back then that I would order a DL1000 VStrom for delivery this winter so that it would be all sorted and prepared for the 2007 Southern Cross. So I now have the VStrom and we'll see how the next Southern Cross ride goes.

I PM'd a reply to your PM re speed limiter removal. I'm surprised the local dealer doesn't know how. Maybe they could contact Sportzone Chch or some other dealer as all I have spoken to seemed to know the routine - not that one would ever want to go that fast of course.
I concur with Jantar's comments. Having come from a 400 to the GS1200, I have found it a lot heavier in corners and the comment about washing the speed off before is bang on. To me it has heaps of torque although I now generally drop a couple of cogs to overtake. Where there is a bit of space, it overtakes plenty quick in 5th (ie top).
In bang for the buck it has got to be near the top.

i find that people either love/hate the gs i saw one in dunedin the other day without the fairing in the old streetfighter style.and would possibly concider buying one in the future
Thunder had one of these when they first came out and was most upset when it cut out at 180kms!!! We managed to get it sorted. best thing for you to do is to cotnact Sportszone Suzuki in CHCH as they got it done for him. As has been previously said the speedo will not show over 180kms and does go up to at least 220kms and maybe faster.![]()

Hi there...no worries on the speed restrictor we have done several of these at work its just a matter of wiring in a diode.We have some in stock (Phils Motorcycle Centre Morrinsville)I have an 03 gs in stock at the moment and have just derestricted it and it does make all the difference.I will get some imfo on this together and get back to you.
I've only had mine since March, and I've only had a few bike before this one, but I've ridden plenty and I LOVE my GS.
Like a few others have said, you definately need be at an appropriate speed for the corner. Otherwise you find yourself leaning way past the point you are comfortable with, and I've had a couple of moments where I've tried to turn in harder and the front has understeered and tried to drop in, and standing it up a little to stay upright makes the whole bike drift across the road.
It is a very stable bike that seems to absorb the crap conditions of the road and is rideable in every gear from 2000rpm, even 5th which is 60kmh.
I don't claim to be an amazing rider but the bike is very forgiving of rider input that isn't quite spot-on.
I bought it in Rangiora and rode it for 11hours to Ackland. Wasnt too uncomfortable.
The speedo only goes to 180kmh but the bike pulls hard to the 9500rpm limiter in 4th(26kmh/1000rpm). My nuts aren't big enough to try it in 5th. And I'm not sure it has the top end to do it in 5th either (285kmh?). Had it dynoed at Henderson Motorcycles and the guy reckoned 92BHP at the wheel around 8000rpm. Goes well from 5-8500rpm and gives me between 15 and 20km per litre.
