Headline " Prumm a class above as National motox champs come to Mercer"


The first round of the 2006 Ssang Yong NZ senior motox championship was held at Mercer's sand based track on the weekend.

No sooner had practice and qualifying finished on the saturday and the area was lashed by heavy rain .

Sunday morning dawned without a cloud in the sky.There were surface puddles about the place but Mercer's sand track was in top condition.

In the nats women's class Bombay world champion Katherine Prumm was a class above the rest.

They had there first race as last session of the day and Prumm won that by a wopping 1min 36secs.

She had lapped the field up to 9th place and certainly showed what made her world champion.

She won race 2 by 1min 14 sec and race 3 by 1 min 15 secs.

Yamaha had sprung a suprise on everyone in the Nats 125cc class.

Riding for Darryll kings Subway Yamaha team was 2005 Austarlian pro lite
(125cc) champion, Cameron Taylor. in the Australian season just finished he was second.

Honda racing also had an Australian, Troy Dorran finished third in the Pro lites.

The kiwi boys certainly kept them honest but Taylor is immensely fast and proved too strong.

He finished the weekend First and Dorran fourth.

Karaka rider Nigel Smith was 11th on his 2007 KTM SX250F.

In the national 250cc class were Pukekohe's Kyle Smith and Ramarama resident Tony Cooksley. Cooksley rode at the World vets champs recently at the Holy Grail of motox Namur, were he came home 8th.

Many of the stars of NZ motocross were there and treated the crowd to some great racing.

Pukekohe Motrcycle club must be congratulated for turning a paddock of river sand into a venue of national standard.
