Why You Should Tell A Newbie To Slow Down

    Taken off another site:

Happened this weekend, group was riding "the gap". Hopefully everybody turns out ok.

This photo is from a group ride yesterday (Sunday). A bunch of friends
from Springfield, MO went for a group ride in northern Arkansas. Great
roads, great weather, great day for a ride. Unfortunately an unknown
'new kid' on a 600RR joined the ride, with a a horrible ego/skill ratio.
The guys were afraid to mention it to him, out of politeness I guess.

They should have. His riding ended up causing tens of thousands in
damage, probably hundreds of thousands in medical, and only by the grace
of God was no one killed. BARELY.

This is a shot taken at the scene of the accident, mere seconds after
the crash. 'Bo' (lower left corner, *UNDER* the truck), is the new CBR
600RR rider that overcooked the corner and proceeded to lowside and
    wedge himself *under* the Chevy.

The older white Ford in the photo veered into the oncoming lane to go
around the wreck, decided against it, and started backing down the hill.
This is where Jason (Duc rider, Springfield Police Officer) met the
truck, 1/2 way around the corner. Jason jumped from the bike just
before impact, and ended up with his head/shoulder through the
windshield. Paul (following behind Jason) hit the old Ford as well,
though didn't sustain as much damage.

Luckily the other riders knew enough not to move ANYONE, so they left
    Bo under the truck, and Jason on the hood. Bo might lose his right arm;
the doctors haven't decided yet. Jason was conscious the whole time,
but understood not to move. Good thing. He's got a fractured C7
vertabra (I think the same thing that happened to Christopeher Reeves).

So...next time you think it's rude or impolite to tell that 'over his
head' rider to cool down or screw off, think of this.
Damn, this would really suck. Also I presume the guy on the 600RR was a learner, yet another fine example of how "great" bikes they are for learning, even though the bike might have not fully contributed to the crash.

Gee, this is really doing the rounds, isn't it? I was first sent this early in the week, by a guy on the LABiker list, then it turned up on two other lists I'm on.

    Anyway, it's pretty sucky...
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Rotten luck for the experienced rider. Hate to say it but this is exactly why I hate being buzzed by 250s on group rides. It's not being passed by a smaller bike. It is someone else making decisions about my safety.

Yup, that chappie who went through the windscreen looked like he was in a t-shirt. And he was supposed to be one of the 'experienced' riders?

Thankfully it's in the US so there is no cost to society. No medical insurance, no decent medical treatment. No rehab, no "welfare" payments while off work.

Well,I can see a leather jacket and helmet behind Paul, and down by Jason it looks like the guys have jackets and boots - what we see are bystanders picking up the pieces. This sort of thing happens to anyone who thinks they can ride better than their real ability - even such astounding riders as myself.

Before I came here I used to post on couple of American Biker forums. Whenever some state started proposals about compulsary helmet laws out came the freedom thing. It's my head and I'm not wearing a helmut 'cause it prevents the wind on my face etc etc. Not too sure if they were wearing helmets but riding bikes without protective clothing.............words fail, just dumb.

Photo's like this show the value of forums such as these but unfortunately here as there, the photo album will never be complete.

Well I think that if they don't want to wear a helmet there isn't anything to protect. I don't really care if the law was to not wear a helmet, I would wear one regardless. Primarliy for head protection from a crash, but also to stop shit hitting my face, stones etc and also massive bugs going up my nose and in my mouth. I've had some fairly decent stones flicked up and hit me when i was riding, wouldn't have liked to get them straight on my face.

Americans will always be like that, you won't be able to stop them. Trouble is that their stupid laws are starting to effect the rest of the world. I saw on Top Gear a few weeks ago that there are some new standards regarding the angle of the a-pillar on cars and some other things about designing cars. The root of the changes is yanks not using their seatbelts so the cars have to be designed to accomodate for an unseatbelted yank not getting hurt in a crash. So now the sports cars with a low pitch roof aren't going to be viable anymore, cause they can't be sold in the states.

These guys were wearing helmets, and it's a lucky thing the cop who exited his bike before impact was, because it put a huge dent in the windshield of the truck he landed on.

There was a lot of discussion (under statement!) about whether this photo was real, or a setup "accident" just to take a photo & scare the masses. Turns out it is real, and there's also a link to a news article which better explains the chain of events that saw 4 more vehicles involved after the first two came together. One of the ute drivers was also unlicenced and uninsured I believe, but can't remember if it was the first c@r or the 2nd one that the cop ended up on the bonnet of.

There was also surprisingly little damage to the Ducati that the cop was riding.
