My sister once had a mouse leap out the toaster but out the exhaust pipe...classic!

Probably GM rats. They just snort it and get a bit of a buzz going.

More serious note, might pay to check the wiring if Mr Rat has been in residence for a while, I know of the little buggers to have a chew or two on wires

yeah, that was my main concern, that they'd chew a water pipe or wiring.
the father in law down invercargill just had one chew through the car window washer bottle & even had a go at the tyre! they got it tho & it was a foot long.

Just remember when trying to exterminate the little buggers with rat poison that a side effect of the poison is to make them go mad with thirst, so that they head for any available water supply. In some cases this is a water tank in the roof. Their ultimate revenge is to expire in the tank where, unnoticed, their slowly decomposing corpse adds a unique bouquet and subtle piquancy to your tap water...

Flour and cement is a good one - they run to find water alright, but it's the last thing they need...nice casts though.

We had a bird cark it in our water tank at work on Waiheke - one of the guys had a welding spark shoot down his ear hole so raced out and stuck his ear under the tap.Not only lost his ear drum but had one hell of an infection in his ear - then we found the bird.Improved the coffee.

Talking about things dying in water tanks - I was getting very annoyd at the young prick who kept riding his 2 stroke dirt bike around at night with no lights, just as I'm going to bed - nweeepp, nweeep, nweeep up and down the road. After a couple of weeks he gave it up - and a couple of weeks after that the neighbours find a dead frog in their tin tank!
