Yep i was taught that way too, but i do it both ways..... On bigger bikes you need you left foot ready to grab second gear (because it needs changing real quick) and also i stretch my right leg out to keep my body lying along the bike to stop it wheelieing of acceleration......

Left, unless emergency braking or uneven ground make this the wrong choice. I have found both feet at once makes the bike less stable, but helps when stopping on a slippery surface.

Well not having ever given it any thought before last w/e I would of said left, but as I rode both days last w/e I found that after I had landed that it was my right foot that was down.
Guess it's all to do with gears and side stand, after all I very realy ever use my rear brake anyway.
    cheers DD

Right foot down unless on a hill in which case I'll stop using front brake(always), then shift to nuetral or 1st then swap feet for a hill start with the foot brake.I find it easier to hill start using the foot brake on a steep slope.

Always right foot down. I brake to a stop, then hold it on the front brake. If stopping at lights I always put the bike in neutral - saves the clutch hand and also if some jerk does hit you from behind you aint going to drop clutch. Then you are ready to snick it into first prepared for take off.

If you put your left foot down how do you handle the gears unless you are on and old pommy bike - play tap dancing from one foot to the other? Not a good idea.
    Cheers
