    Sorted!

I'm not going to live this down anytime soon.
Pixie and I removed the carbs and, hello! the slides only open half way.
Pulled the tops off and all 4 diaphragm springs are coil bound.
The tops haven't been off since we did the rejet way back when.
I reckon it was his cock up, he says I put the tops on. So we'll just have to agree................................that he did it.
It's like a new bike, not only has it got all the neddies it's supposed to have, but it's really smooth too.

So can you explain exactly how this occurred? i.e. what made the springs coil bound and all four to boot?
    Cheers

I'm trying to help others avoid the same mistake here - so how did you manage to get the springs coil bound - do they catch somewhere or you stick them in upside down or what? i.e. it obviously wasn't foolproof so what does one need to do to avoid this happening?
    Cheers

Originally we dropped the carb tops onto the slides while they were in the closed position. This allows enough room for the springs to kink sideways inside the chamber. This time we lifted the slides open, then eased the top onto the slide. This kept the spring located correctly. You still need to be careful while doing it.
AND ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE SLIDES ARE OPENING FULLY WHEN THEY'RE ASSEMBLED.
