Ok...now I'm really bored!

I've been thinking about ways I could get my dog on my bike & take her a few places. There are a few reasons I want to do this: so I can take her to the beach & so I can take her when I visit friends. I don't have a car either.

I was thinking of "making" a box with a couple of sides that can be opened and I'd want the box so that it can be taken on and off the bike.

I wouldn't want to take her on long trips though. I mean is this realistic? Or is it just stoopid & dangerous? Has anyone else done it?

She's a bit smaller than a lab but bigger than a bull terrier.

It's best to start them off real young.
After they get a bit older they also get a bit smarter an generaly won't have a bar of such sillyness.
But try it mate,after all what can go wrong.

Ummm,If the dog lives an you don't can I Have the dog?

The only reason I started thinking about it more seriously was b/c the other day I was mucking doing some stuff with the bike & when I called her she jumped up on the back of it with me - it was stationary at the time though.

Heh heh - she's cute aye, I wish she'd been allowed to have pups but she was an SPCA dog & they have to be fixed.

Well, I dunn think there's any actual rule about not taking animals on the back of a bike. But I can't be arsed checking, so YMMV.

She looks like she'd fit in a super-jumbo size cat carrier if you pushed hard. Shove her in one of those and bungee it to the back seat. Job's a good 'un.

Don't worry about the cat carrier just use the bungees,use enough of them and the dog won't go anywhere!

Try putting a bit of carpet on the tank and try taking her riding round a carpark.If she seems fine then try a quiet street.
I must say I don't reccomend it as basicly she could cause ya to fall off.

I have seen a Dog box like they used to put on tractors, farm utes etc (the letterbox style that gets mounted on the tow ball) mounted to a pack rack. That used to take a huntaway (about the size of your dog but lighter).

Talk to a bike shop that also deals in farm equipment.

Out of curiosity how heavy is she and how old is she?

There was the old geeser with the famous cat that sat on his tank. Both killed by a drunk driver near Wanganui I recall a few years ago. There was a guy often seen riding wgtn-J/ville roads on a vintage bike with a dog that sat on the tank. Haven't seen them for a couple of years now? May have had some sort of harness? You obviously care for the dog and he will love getting out and about (mine do) but hell of risk in an off. Poor fella will have zero protection and get skinned alive. If you can't get use of a car then give it a try- just make sure he's secure I guess and he's not terrified

I would not want to be on a bike where a fairly high (compared to C of G) mass of 20 kgs suddenly got antsy and made a move, perhaps into a locked door when she smelt a cat. Have you taken any pillions yet? If not I suggest you try it before scaring both yourself and your dog shitless. It will make less of a difference if she is real placid or you wait till you have a bigger rig.

Perhaps some kind of pannier?

or perhaps you will have to wait till your next dog and start her real young.

I took my mates 8 month old bull terrier cross on my old NSR250R once. It had a really flat tank and I stuck her back legs between my legs on the seat and her front paws on the tank. My arms formed a cradle around her, but I only took her about a km up the road at 30km max. She loved it and didn't make a fuss or struggle at all. My biggest worry was that she would scratch the tank.

Remember the Bell Tea ? ad's with Max? and his cat on the bike - they were taken out by a car...bastards.

Take her out in a safe place to start and see how she goes.
