Unhappy Biker Down Just South Of Whangarei 4pmish Fri 29/9/06

Didn't look good. Ambo with rider in paddock. Blue bike (poss Honda Blackbird) on the road facing/heading North on the North side of the hill with the passing lane before the Maungakamea turn-off about 10km South of Whangarei. Police and Fire there too.
Have Txt BigB and it wasn't him. Hope who ever the rider was is OK, but with the length of time the Ambo was there as well as the rider having gone through the fence, it didn't look good.
My thoughs are with ya mate and ya family, who ever ya are.

Let's be carefull out there Dudes and Dudettes.

Southbound 4WD/ute did a right turn to go into a driveway and didn't see the bike at the end of a queue of northbound traffic and drove into the side of the bike. I was in a southbound car and saw it from afar, but lots ahead of me had stopped cell phones out, tidying up etc so after initially stopping i moved on.

Made me feel sick to see it, my thoughts have been with the rider since.

North Bound Traffic is going fairly fast on that side of the hill as they try ta finish passing as the passing lane ends. Ya would have a lot difficulty trying ta get in to that driveway heading South. By the time ya see the vehicles popping over the hill and coming around the slight bend they would be on ya without much chance of stopping in time. Definitely a danger spot that most of us would not have thought of coming over the hill.

Attached Local Paper report on the accident.

The Rider is a local I've been told. I was also told he was in shorts and a T-shirt. I hope that part is wrong. The Bike was a Blue Blackbird.

Fcnk 4 X 4 drivers. It's always the same story. The fckers should be banned.

I hope the rider recovers quickly.

No matter how careful you are what can you do to prevent someone hitting you side on like that?

I saw a couple of riders yesterday out in shorts and light tops - big bikes too.

Does this mean I look foolish riding a 250 in full leathers?

    Cool

Gee the article says he is lucky....

He only has a broken leg, arm, NECK and suspected internal injuries.
The ambo staff says he he is lucky he is not more seriously hurt...

So having a broken neck aint serious!!!!!!!!!
Nor having suspected internal injuries !!!!!!!

I would say all the injuries he suffered are serious as he will be off his bike for some time.

Heck thats my old home ground too. I think they meant the rider is lucky to survive fullstop. Theres an old rule about riding. How you can never be visible enough though it sounds like the driver was doing a speed move to get into that driveway and simply made a bad judgement. Theres a big campaign on at the moment about exactly these sorts of bad 'calls' epecially at intersections. HECK, you are right re calling those so called lucky injuries. Hope they are OK and pull through ASAP.

Guys it's a bad spot. Would be very frustrating trying ta get in ya driveway there, considering is SH1 on a Friday arvo just on the end of a passing lane on the blind side of a hill. The accident would still have happened if it wasn't a 4x4. Would have been worse if it had been a truck (or a car full of family). Do we know how fast the bike was going? Cause if he was coming over that hill hot the driver would not have seen him soon enough. Both Rider and driver made bad calling IMHO. And yes the Rider is dam lucky ta still be alive.

As it is we weren't there, so my thoughts go out to all those directly affected by this accident.

    Heal well Dude.

Cripes, I'm sitting in a cyber cafe here in Wellywood and this is the first thread I've read!

I've just done the KB ride down here yesterday with Zapf and it was a fine ride. Will definitely be taking it careful coming back up on Wednesday!

That bike looked a real mess...and as others said...his injuries were considered "lucky"??

I am sorry why are you making excuses for a lazy cunt who is not willing to travel a little further and turn across traffic in a spot that is safe to do so before turning around and heading back to his driveway on the same side of the road.

He took a stupid risk and I hope he gets nailed for it, stupidity is NO EXCUSE!
